The Ocean Doesn’t Ask Me To Explain Myself

I learned how to breathe where the footsteps don’t follow ,

where the air stays low and the sky feels hollow,

the ocean holds open a quiet I borrow,

no names in the water,

no past to swallow,

I float in a blue that refuses tomorrow, just now

& the wave

& the wind that’s shallow,

no echo behind me,

no eyes to shadow,

just salt on my skin & a path I don’t follow,

the tide moves slow with a silver promise,

a rhythm that doesn’t demand or comment,

it hums in my bones like a soft-voiced omen,

not warning or worship,

just moment and motion,

I leave my shape in the sand as a token,

a version of me that’s already broken,

& carry my breath where the blue stays open,

beyond what’s named

& beyond what’s spoken.

FREEDIVING PRIESTESS OF BELT-TO-A$$

Being a 125-year-old woman who loves mindfulness and natural beauty, Sandra Wu-San, a.k.a. Lady Shiva, cherishes her peace and quiet. One of her favorite pastimes, aside from annihilating every training dummy within a 5-mile radius, has always been Freediving, the art of deep diving without oxygen tanks or any sort of pressure gear. Whenever she isn't putting Belt-To-Ass on every deserving criminal she finds in Gotham City or hanging with the rest of the Batfamily, Sandra loves to freedive in Gotham's waterways, primarily the river and harbour, even when it's only 5 degrees and snowing outside. Since she'd trained for years with Buddhist monks who meditate in nearly unlivable conditions and also has a healing factor, environmental damage is more of a minor inconvenience to her. She loves the peacefulness and tranquility underwater, the quietness allowing her time to truly think clearly without sitting for hours in the Lotus position in her penthouse.

Unfortunately, given that she is swimming in the waters of a notorious hell city known for its crime and corruption, some of the runoff tends to spill into the harbours, and I don't just mean the toxic spills from ACE Chemicals. Almost every time Sandra goes for a swim, she finds a corpse chained to a block of concrete at the bottom of the harbour. But given how she's very closely tied to Death, it doesn't faze her. In fact, she has actually made a habit of unchaining the corpses to properly bury them. Yes, it is an incredibly morbid hobby, but she is a firm believer in the concept of Honor, and especially in the Honorable Death. After all, an honorable death doesn't need to happen on the field of battle, and the dead should at least be buried with some dignity. Besides, it's a real eyesore seeing all of those poor bastards hanging at the bottom of the harbour like non-explosive sea mines.
