Happy Bastille Day! Looking for a little French inspiration? Stroll through our galleries of French Impressionists or the gardens of the Rodin Museum and then visit our friends at Eastern State Penitentiary for Bastille Day 2018: The Farewell Tour.
We salute mothers in their many roles with this striking work by Mary Cassatt, the only woman to exhibit with the original group of French Impressionists. Early in her career, she depicted independent young women engaged in a variety of activities, and she is best known for her later depictions of mothers and children. The woman’s striking red dress, referenced in the title, draws our eye up to the baby on her shoulder, and Cassatt made clever use of a mirror to show the mother’s face, a compositional device she might have learned from studying old master paintings, or from her close association with the French Impressionist Edgar Degas.
