My Frieren Insight - I think Serie loves Genau (platonic)

I was rewatching Frieren Season 2, as one does, and I got to the scene in episode 8 where Genau and Serie are at his previous partner's funeral. As Serie leaves, she tells Genau that he is an unpleasant and unkind man and that he should stay that way. At first watch, I thought that was a pretty cruel thing to say.

Upon rewatching it, I realized that was the only way Serie knew how to tell Genau to stay safe and alive. We don't see Serie a lot, so I don't know if I'm reading her correctly, but while rewatching her interactions with Genau the only thing I could think was, "Wow, she really likes him." She thinks highly of him and likes him as a person and mage in the best "master and student" and "Serie" way that she can. Her words are harsh because she has never had to bend the way she speaks to accommodate other people's feelings. But the fact that she cares is also evident in her interactions with her mages.

Genau is a good man. He is unpleasant, but he is kind. I'm glad that we got to understand him more this season.
