Winter burial
I was walking through Leek Cemetery Tuesday when I saw the Sexton and his assistant hard at work.
"Tough job," I said.
The sexton shrugged and replied, "Some people just don't want to wait."
I had the vague notion that when a person died in winter, the body was placed in cold storage and the burial postponed until the ground thawed.
A did a little research and found that while cold storage for a few months is one option, some cemeteries use modern digging machinery for all-season burials.
I did notice that the Leek Sexton had a backhoe waiting in the wings.
