I rescued several Dahlias in bud from our #communitygarden compost pile and am enjoying this sunny bouquet today. Yes, I dig through what others discard. You can call me a trash picker, but I call myself a super-frugal gardener. This week, I also found a pile of fresh Rosemary branches and several hot red pepper plants with 100s of peppers still hanging on. Hedgerow treasures. Left plenty for the birds. These nigella seeds were literally blown into my path today; their wavy stems getting knocked about by passing cars. Frugal Gardening Tip: Y’all know those little greenhouse sprouting trays with the clear dome on top? The ones that are $7-$14 at your garden center? Here’s how you can get one for free, we’ll almost free. Next time your at the grocery store swing by the bakery and grab a dozen of your favorite cookies in the clear clam shell container. Once your home, eat said cookies (or place them into the cookie jar, personal preference) and wash the plastic container. Poke some drainage holes in the bottom (I use and old scratch awl that I heat up with a small butane torch) and fill it with your favorite seed starting mix. Plant your seeds, water in, and close the lid, er...humidity dome.
