Coronavirus/Covid 19 - Some Thoughts

This blog is very concerned about the virus, but will be posting on it only when there is something original or a little different to say.

The best known UK stock market index is the FTSE100. It rose today from 4,994 to 5,446, which is a remarkable 9.1% increase. This rise doesn’t indicate a trend (i.e. a change which takes place over a period of time), but is typical of current market volatility. The rise could be wiped out tomorrow or it could be repeated. Stock markets are irrational and, in times of uncertainty, large daily rises and falls are fed to a great extent by emotion exacerbated by speculators.

As a contrarian investor, I made an extra purchase when the index fell to about 5,100 in the belief that the doom and gloom had been overdone. As always, time will tell, but even if this was wrong, it made a small contribution to reducing market volatility.

As an aside, the plural of index is indexes when you are talking about the things you find at the end of non fiction books. In stock markets and mathematics, the plural of index is indices. If you hear an “expert” talking about “stock market indexes”, he or she is not an expert. Switch off!

In my view, our government is doing a generally good job in a new and unpredictable situation. One subject we have heard very little of is the expiry dates of MOT certificates. For non UK readers, this is a document most vehicles need in order to be classed as roadworthy and allowed on public roads for the following year. MOT testing centres and motor mechanics are under pressure like the rest of us. The government should announce some relaxation on MOT certificate expiry dates.
