Cancer has a way of putting things in perspective like nothing else can. Sonia Webster AKA @my_heel_obsession AKA loving teacher lost her fight with cancer yesterday. She was in her thirties and has 2 kids and 1 stepkid. She was diagnosed in March and fought like such a warrior as the cancer spread through her body to her brain. I started to get upset tonight about a very rude email I received from a parent and then I saw what Sonia's daughter posted and I dropped what I was doing (and upset about) and grabbed my kids and held them so tight and cried. The bullshit does not matter. What matters is making the most out of the time we have here. Sonia's daughter's words: My mom is the strongest woman I know because of all the things she went through in her life. She is a person that has been a big part of my growth as an individual​ and will always be my mother. The things she shared with me changed my perspective on the way I live my life. March 2019 was when my mom first was diagnosed with stage four uterus/lung/lymph node cancer. Instead of being negative and being down about what she's going through she persevered and didn't let anything bring her down. On July 12, 2020 my mom suffered a stroke like seizure and found out that she had Stage four brain cancer. No matter what her struggle was she never let it bring her down. Some days were tough but she pushed through all of it. She made me the person I am today because she showed me that life is much more then we perceive. My mom is a warrior and in her words she said, “I know I don’t have much time, but I’m definitely not losing to cancer! I am fighting every single day. I am using every moment of my life to inspire, encourage, and empower others. I will leave this earth knowing that I have made a difference in another human being‘s life, by the life that I have led. Not many can say that. #fucancer!" And that is what she did, she fought so hard. She used all the power she had and stayed with us until she knew she was ready to go. One year later after my diagnosis...

It is one year since I discovered that I had cancer. This past year has been a whirlwind of events. The shock of having it and being alone to deal with it was hard. I felt like life was trying erase me from existing. It was as if I was being told that it was my time to go and that I should give up and accept my own death.

Through the discovery of my tumour, I have done a lot of self evaluation. I have come to see and understand how and when dysfunctional people come into my life. I can now allow them to go their own way without putting blame on myself for their issues. 

During my recovery time, I met a lot of wonderful people who helped me when they could. Having these friends support me during my chemo was an amazing experience. I believe that this event paved the way for me to make some major changes in my life.

In this past year, I have learned about self worth, self love and self dedication. I have learned that self love is not selfish but beneficial to my own being and to the relationships that I have with others. If I love myself, then I am open to being loved by others and that these people are not like the ones I attracted in the past. These new friends can see my worth and let me know that they do indeed see something in me that maybe I had not considered in the past.  I am worth getting to know, to love and be who I am without judgement.

There is no doubt that I had tough times with my chemo. On several occasions, I really wanted to give up, but didn’t. There were friends there to support me, to listen to my pain, to empathize with my suffering and just accept me. This concept seemed foreign to me and I began to see that a new form of healing had to take place.

In my healing, I have learned to laugh and have fun. Secondly, I can now take care of myself without worry that I am not giving enough to others. I have learned that being a caregiver has limits and that I shouldn’t give more to others than I have to give to myself. Doing all of this has also allowed me to let go of the past and look to today as I truly say my mantra of “carpe diem.” Seize the day and be the most authentic me that I can and relish in this.

This week, I went to have my bloodwork done for my cancer markers. As I write this, I am waiting for the results to see if I am still in remission. It is true that I have some worry, but regardless of the outcome, I will continue to be me. I will still love myself and my friends. I will be me and be comfortable with that.

Last week my aunt told my family that she was diagnosed with the early stages of breast cancer. It felt like I was in a dream when she told us the news - it didn’t seem real at all what my family was being told. Never in my life did I imagine that someone I have been so close to my entire life would ever get sick like this. I’m still shaken up from the news. I wore this shirt at work and was asked why I was wearing it. It was so hard for me to not start tearing up talking about my aunt’s diagnosis. There’s an M on the sleeve of this shirt in honor of my aunt (the first letter of her name), to help me remember the fight that my aunt is going to start taking very soon with treatment. We are so grateful she has been given an amazing prognosis, but not everyone is as lucky. ☹️ This experience has been teaching me to live each moment of everyday, and don’t worry about the little things. It’s teaching me what really matters in life, and what is so small and unimportant during this lifetime. Praying for those all over the world who are also affected by this awful disease. I hope someday they will find a cure so nobody will ever get sick like this again. 🙏🏻🎀 @taylorswift @taylornation

  ❤️💛💚💙💜 11 years 5 months and 25 days ago, you changed my whole entire life. I was only 7, just turned too. Through the years, I’ve had some shitty people come and go, but the only one who’s been consistent, the longest friendship I’ve had, is you. I’ve been bullied for years and years, the only thing holding me together was your music. Every night after school, I’d come home crying, and I’d just go up in my room and BLAST your music, it’s what helped me cope. I couldn’t relate to the songs in the same exact situations, but I definitely could in my own ways. You taught me to be Fearless in 2008. Then in 2010, you helped me believe in myself again. In 2012, you made me see that I didn’t need anyone, as long as I was being my true self, and living like I was feeling 22. With 1989, it taught me that my past can’t haunt me forever, and it was time to let go, I’m not anyone’s opinion of me, and it’s okay to not be okay... Pain makes you stronger. Oh, and to “shake off” the haters. And then the release of repuation...... well, it’s making me see that you shouldn’t trust everyone, and if you do, watch out because they might just end up stabbing you in the back, but you need to come back stronger,”And in the death of her reputation, she truly felt alive.” I have come back from so much shit, body image issues, bullying, family problems, eating disorders, mental health (that i’m still battling everyday), self harm, suicide attempts, aggression... My Mom got diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer, and it’s been a real struggle coping with it, but reputation is helping so so so much. It would mean alot to her and I if we could meet you when we drive up to Cleveland in July to see you, she’ll be doing chemo by then, but we’re taking a little vacation just for you, my mom’s a real swiftie :). I really honestly wouldn’t be the person I am today without you, hell, I don’t even think I’d be sitting here writing this. I am nothing without you Taylor. Nothing. You are my life and my heart. It’s Okay To Let Go 28 June 2017 Yesterday I talked to Charlotte about how warm the winter has been, with blue skies and golden sunshine. I told her how the leaves were still holding on, all russet and orange. She responded with a shuddering breath. She let go this morning at 5 o'clock and I picture her spirit releasing its grip and soaring free.

My whole head felt tight. I did a 4km walk in the sunshine with Mitzy to relax (I forgot to start my Garmin yet again), and a 14 minute meditation (which Mitzy interupted with a couple of nerve-shattering barks). It’s been an emotional couple of days. At work I was offered an extension of my position to cover a new cancer clinic just opening - basically doubling my hours - so that was a positive thing today.

Hearty steak, paprika baked veges and a guac topping were on the menu tonight. My Boy dropped over to see if My Girl & I were ok but he was terribly out of sorts himself - so many set-backs this year; it’s tough embarking on indpendent life - so we ended up bolstering (and feeding) him. Keeping a positive attitude is so important; being upbeat is self-perpetuating, as is being glum.

I did it!

Today was the day that I presented my idea for a cancer fundraiser to the school. It went extremely well! 

I told my story about my battle with cancer. I described how I wanted to contribute to our school through my fundraiser idea.  The response was amazing! I’ve already got a pile of audition requests and students who want to volunteer as stage hands. There is no doubt now that my dream will come true! 

My Principal has been an outstanding advocate for me. When he introduced me to the school with my proposal, I was brought to tears because of his unconditional support for what I wanted to do! He is someone who believes in me! It turns out that I believe in me too! This is going to happen.

I felt like a new person, standing up in front of those students. I was nervous, but I felt good about what I was doing.

So far, I have received audition requests for solo singers, dancers, pianists, choir singers and a multitude of helpers for stage and sales. Now comes the hard part: planning, prepping, practicing and praying!
