I think I’ve just learned how a Vorlon eats...
I love this deleted scene from the otherwise forgettable Superman Returns film. I feel it missed an opportunity though to introduce a new villain to the Superman movies: the animated series version of Brainiac which could have lain dormant all those years until it sensed Kal-El’s ship and uploaded itself to the ship’s computer. On Earth, hijinks ensue. But I digress...
But the other thought I have is just how beautiful Kryptonian crystal technology appears in the film. We see it working even though we have no idea how it works.
I am immediately reminded of the Vorlons and Shadows and how their ships are depicted much the same way: mysterious, unknowable, but nevertheless quite functional.
The Kryptonians would have been right at home in the Babylon 5 universe as First Ones, or at least their ships would be :-)
Sheridan's speech to the warmongering ambassadors in "All My Dreams Torn Asunder" is always what comes to mind every time yet another headline about the instability in the Middle East comes up.
It makes me question if the attempts at peace-making for various parts of the region will ever do any good or if it may be necessary, despite the cost in blood, to just let the various factions "have it out" until they are ready to come together and talk...
Psi Corps as a Union
Here is the very long reply that I promised to fuckyeahb5's analysis of Bester vis-a-vie Psi Corps, which somehow turned into "sketching out what Psi Corps might look like in union form" and "what might have happened in a differently written universe where Psi Corps is evil but still well-intentioned and gets to demonstrate why it has been acting in such an awful way". If you're only interested in the later, just ctrl-F for "AU suggestion" : )
WATCHING BABYLON 5 AS IT AIRED...
I missed several episodes of Babylon 5's first season during its original run. 1994 me was still rather indecisive about the whole experience.
Seeing some Shadows posts in my quest to slowly, but surely, view all of http://fuckyeahb5.tumblr.com's posts (awesome blog, seriously...get on it if you are not already), I find myself thinking of the first time I had actually seen the Shadow mantises.
I had seen Shadow Vessels before: intrigued by them in "Distant Star", vaguely recalling the one that wasted the Narn heavy cruiser in "Revelations" (or was it because we were treated to it again and again during Season 2's opening?), and stunned by their raw power and terrifying beauty in the "Coming of Shadows".
But I didn't know what, as beings, the Shadows looked like until Talia Winters had passed by Mr. Morden in "In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum". Having missed "Chrysalis", the Shadow mantises were a surprise reveal to me.
Never alone indeed...
Sometimes I wonder if that's when we, as viewers, should have first seen them? It made them seem scarier and even more otherworldly to me...a trait the First Ones all notably share thanks to the CGI animation. Plus not seeing the mantises clearly forces your imagination to fill in the gaps, adding yet another layer to their creepiness, all from about a second or two of footage.
It wasn't until TNT had rerun Babylon 5 in its entirety that I would see the mantises when viewers were supposed to have seen them. It makes me wonder if I had accidentally gotten the better first experience rather the more casual reveal in the otherwise emotionally heavy "Chrysalis"?
You know, I submitted 5 "unpopular opinions" to the fuckyeahb5 unpopular opinions week on the first possible submission day, and I haven't seen a single one get posted publically. I don't know why, either...they weren't nasty or anything, just opinions...
I don't know if there was there something else I should have done. :(
"The universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements: energy, matter, and enlightened self interest." -G'kar
I don't see it being talked about much but one thing that really stood out for me with B5 was the changing opening credits with every season. I remember when I first watched episode 1 of season 3 and the '...it failed' hit, followed by the darker theme. I got goosebumps, it was such an awesome feeling and really defined how different this show was. It's a feeling I haven't gotten from many other TV shows.
