My mother is one of the funniest people I've ever known. One day, after i had come back from a first time visit to the UK, I had brought back a delicacy familiar to Asian cuisine but rather strange to my mother, who is born and raised African. Wood ear mushrooms. I had explained what they were to her and although she was acquainted with Mushrooms in general, wood ear mushrooms were strange to her. So that day, i took out some dried wood ear mushrooms and boiled water alongside my mother who was cooking. When the water boiled, i turned around and poured it on the mushrooms in the bowl and the next thing she says in the most serious tone possible 'Ah ha, ma po kini yen ninu abo taa fin jeun, o sa mo pe poison ni' (don't mix that thing in the plates we eat with, you know it's poison'. And i just burst out laughing because i know she knows it's not poison. She had likened the texture to that of tripe when she first tasted it.
