New WoT art! Why am I obsessed with Furyk Karede? Can't say, but it was fun to draw him with his sole reason for living. I took a liberty, as he would obviously never rest his hand on the person of the Empress. But deep down, he's just a protective step-dad; maybe that's why I love him. Anyway, enjoy fellow WoT-heads!

no idea what kind of temperature this take is, but I genuinely really like Furyk Karede as a character and am always excited to see him. His stony, serious demeanor sorta reads as Lan Mandragoran: Seanchan Edition, but I find that his POVs lack a lot of the elements that make dealing with the Seanchan so grating; he comes into contact with the deep evils of the Empire left and right, but never really glorifies them. Karede is distanced from the military officers, sul’dam, and other members of the Blood that make up most of our Seanchan POVs; all the fucked-up stuff happening around him rolls off him like water off a duck’s back because he’s got a job to do, so you get this jarringly clear image of the Seanchan from his POV – free of the more intense brainwashing the sul’dam and damane have going on, and free of the incessant stream of details about rank that you get with characters like Suroth and Egeanin. Karede is still afforded some immense prestige via his proximity to the Imperial family, and he understands the complex politics those other groups engage in, but he’s also deeply and inextricably embedded in an oppressed class himself – he and every other Deathwatch Guard are property, and raised in some deeply fucked ways to fulfill their roles. The way he dispassionately recounts getting attached to Tuon after foiling three assassination attempts on her when she was a baby and asking to be allowed to stay on her personal guard on three different occasions is… I was going to say “incredible”, but he literally describes everything with this same level of detachment. Like I said. Seanchan Lan. Things just are what they are to this guy. There is nobody else doing it like him
