Odonaru: Japanese & English Comparison Part 8
Disclaimer: All posts in this compilation are tagged "odonaru jp to en" on my blog. They are not arranged chronologically, and are mostly meant to write down my own impressions for my own tag. These translations will be far from perfect even if i try not to tackle anything too out of my depth... I would be very happy if a fluent/native speaker were to see and correct any of these translations
Spirit of Justice: Until the end
This is during the Day 2 Trial in Turnabout Revolution, when Apollo is being offered to drop the defence and accept a Guilty verdict, in exchange for him and Phoenix being pardoned under the DC Act. Being convicted under the DC Act means public execution in this instance, but Apollo refuses the offer nonetheless and this is the dialogue that follows his refusal:
Japanese:
Odoroki: . . . . Naruhodou-san. I am sorry. I can't back down here. As for you, Naruhodou-san, even if you don't do this with me. . . . Naruhodou: Odoroki-kun. I mean to go with you until the very end. Besides, this is not my first time in this situation. (...) Naruhodou: Odoroki-kun. I have no objections. Keep going with the defense.
O: . . . .Naruhodou-san. Sumimasen. Ore, hikisagaru wake ni wa ikimasen. Naruhodou-san wa, ore ni tsukiawanakute mo. . . . N: Odoroki-kun. Boku wa saigo made, kimi ni tsukiau tsumori da yo. Sore ni, kou iu joukyou wa, hajimete tte wake janai. (...) N: Odoroki-kun. Boku ni mo izon wa nai. Bengo wo tsuzukeru yo.
English Localization:
Apollo: …Mr. Wright. I'm sorry, but I can't back down now. I don't want to drag you into this, so… Phoenix: Don't worry, I'm with you, Apollo… to the bitter end, if need be. And while I can't say I'm used to it, this isn't exactly my first rodeo. (...) Phoenix: So keep on fighting, Apollo. You'll hear no objections from me!
I'm clutching my heart. what is this fever dream... in both versions....
I like that Apollo clearly offered for Phoenix to step down by himself, to let Apollo do this alone, he clearly offered for Phoenix not to die with him (if it comes down to it), and in both versions Phoenix just smiles and says nope, he intends to accompany Apollo until the very end ...my heart.
