Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Rabbi of the Lincoln Square Synagogue, explains Shabbat HaGadol; 2017.
Shabbat HaGadol, meaning ‘Great Shabbat’ in Hebrew, occurs on the Shabbat immediately before Passover and it is commemorated by reading a Haftarah from the book of Malachi. Hezekiah da Silva argues that the reasoning for this Shabbat is that the Jewish people were commanded to fulfill their first mitzvah – to set aside the lamb as a sacrifice before the Exodus from Egypt. This significant achievement is therefore called gadol (’big’ or ‘great’ in Hebrew). Additionally, by fulfilling this first mitzvah Jewish people became like a child maturing into adulthood – such as a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Thus, the name Shabbat HaGadol would translate as ‘The Shabbat the Jewish people became gadol/mature adults’. Rabbi Moshe Sofer argues the reasoning for the name of the Shabbat, saying that on this day the Jewish people fully ‘returned’ to their commitment and faith in G-d. G-d is called gadol (’Big’ or ‘Great’ in Hebrew). Therefore, the Jewish people who embraced G-d earned the title gadol as well.

Oh wow, this took a long time to do. Inktober day 3.
And it was hard, and scary to do. It’s hard to do characters in enviroments... So yeah, Gadol all done up and pretty on a blacony infront of the sea and islands. Why is she all done up? Is she a bride at 16? Coming of age ceremony? Virgin sacrifice? I don’t know your guess is as good as mine.
Inktober is the scariest part of October.
Also my actual drawing for the first day is a bit overambitious and backgrounds are scary af. So i’ll finish it tomorrow, maybe.
My character Gadol, with a rune pillar.
