The archaeological remains of the house of Francis and Mary Moore at Frederica National Monument on St. Simons Island in #Georgia. Francis Moore was the keeper of supplies in the King's Storehouses. Three years after founding Georgia in 1733, Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe established Fort Frederica to defend the colony against Spanish attack from Florida. In the 1742 battles of Bloody Marsh and Gully Hole Creek, forces under Oglethorpe successfully repulsed Spanish attempts to invade St. Simons Island. By 1743, nearly 1,000 people lived at Frederica. The area within the fort's walls was a bustling community which included a tavern, butcher shop, candle maker, carpenter, and doctor, among many other trades. The fort remained active until a peace treaty between Great Britain and Spain was signed in 1748. Many residents continued living in the community until 1758, when a large fire destroyed the town. #Frederica was then abandoned and forgotten by time. In 1945, #FortFredericaNationalMonument was established.
