Middle School Monday: Ambushed! The Assassination Plot Against President Garfield by Gail Jarrow 

James Garfield is one of the least-known American presidents, primarily because a man named Charles Guiteau shot Garfield less than four months into his presidential term. This book covers plenty of topics, including what happened before and during that event. It explores the backgrounds of both of these men, and how their life choices put them on that terrible intersection course with each other. And it also takes a deeper dive into the medical mistakes that took place after Garfield was shot, which explains why this book is part of the Medical Fiascoes series. 

Give this book to older kids and younger teens who are interested in history, science, and strange-but-true stories!

Middle School Monday: Spooked! How a Radio Broadcast and The War of the Worlds Sparked the 1938 Invasion of America by Gail Jarrow

In 1938, a radio adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel The War of the Worlds was so believable that many people believed there was a real Martian invasion. It used an innovative format of having a music broadcast that sounded real (but was really fake) that was interrupted by news bulletins about Martians landing in New Jersey, emerging from their ships, and then attacking people. The broadcast was so believable that it kept some listeners glued to their seats, while others left their homes to see the locations that were mentioned on the show or even tried to escape before the Martians could get them.

This is a nonfiction book, which means that it’s a real book about a fake story. It contains lots of information about the broadcast, about the people who created it (including H.G. Wells and Orson Welles), and about the listeners who either loved or hated the broadcast.

P.S. - If you haven’t listened to that famous broadcast already, it’s absolutely worth a listen!!!

Reluctant Reader Wednesday: Bubonic Panic: When Plague Invaded America by Gail Jarrow

This book covers the past, present, and future of the plague, which will probably come as a surprise to most readers.  Plague wasn’t just something that happened in medieval times?  Yes!  Plague is something that’s still happening now?  YES!!!  

This book is informative enough to make it valuable for assignments, but also gruesome enough to entice reluctant readers.  It’s filled with facts about how the disease works, how it spread at different times in history, and how racism and social ideas affected how governments tried to stop the disease from spreading.  

It’s a good choice for a compelling and educational read, as long as you’re not reading it during dinner!
