AS Level Art Sketchbook Pt4, 2009
Preparatory studies for this installation - this was the space aspect, and worth its own post.
These are paintings of nebulae/galaxies referencing photos from the HubbleSite Gallery. I prepared the backgrounds by painting them black and using a toothbrush to fleck white, blue, ochre and red paint onto it, before painting straight on top with Windsor and Newton Galleria acrylics. First one I stuck the picture down and then imagined what the rest of it would look like, as well as copying another one - second two are copies as well, and you can see what I copied on the page.
If you can go anywhere, where would you go? I feel like if I’d go into my mind, I would. A galazy of thoughts and imagination. Stars of memories and black holes of mental illnesses, eating away the happy stars and reflecting moons. To see the beauty in the dark, you must open your eyes and see the stars.

Distance is relative to size as we grow galaxies grow nearer

Sometimes I sit alone under the stars and think of the galaxies inside my heart, and truly wonder if anyone will ever want to make sense of all that I am.

You said you loved stars I didn't realize until my world had become black that you didn't mean the kind you see in humans
I love looking out, taking in the patterns of the world and seeing the stars glitter, but when you open your eyes there's no need because so much more than even the most beautiful galaxies live in them and I'm so lucky
