Soooooo many paintings @ The National Gallery in London, I had to pace myself among the greats. If I lived life as a vampire, condemned to the hell of eternal existence of being hungry all the time and watching all my loved ones die before 👁, I dunno.. I think I could still find a level of happiness and possibly meaning here, just having the time to absorb every brushstroke, eyelash, colour gradient in length and detail ahhhhhh, Satan’s heaven 😈🧛‍♀️At last, back to the wee finite and mortal time I do have which this massive collection can make you suddenly aware of, I had to prioritize! Sticking with what I know, what everyone knows, Mr. Gogh was a go to. Yes I have studied his paintings extensively, in every library, book store I have been to but always to see these works in person and witness the gunk of paint in 3D and in shadow is always a whole other experience! Museum staff were friendly and helpful in helping me to navigate the giant space and I didn’t even get into trouble getting too close to the paintings this time! I was surprised they let me take pictures. I did discover some lesser known works by artists I’m fairly familiar with too, but sometimes also it’s just nice to be in a room of people who like looking at paintings. I think about these art fans when I’m painting, whether or not they’re my fans in particular, doesn’t really matter, just knowing that there are humans that like looking at paintings make long lonely studio days fulfilling. Moving on I really liked the epic painting of the beheading, def. made me want to read a little more about it. The painting with the tiny paintings, also great. and that was my first time seeing a Vermeer in real life! Go to place for ol’ timely painting and I don’t mean bad nor boring when I say ol’ timely, quite the opposite!! Had fun at the TATE Modern. Here are some of my favourite things, some more palpable than others, some beautiful, some ugly, but in a this-is-a-good-talking-point kind of way.. as is the case with modern art, but all these left on me an impression I wouldn’t have otherwise given up. First the building, I was imagining more light colours on metallic surfaces and more natural light inside from the use of the word Modern but modern art tricked me again and I found myself approaching something more like a prison-like U of T library! I also quite enjoyed the world’s ugliest waterfall situated out front. The monochrome art exhibit elevators were interesting and blinding when the elevator doors opened to the fluorescent yellow lighting on the 3rd? floor, very disorienting, like being in the Matrix. I loved it but couldn’t stand it all at the same time! The interactive orange felt wall was fun and accessible. I liked the gross hotdog but the Surrealism room was a favourite as always for me. Could use more Magritte but was happy enough to see at least one and the one Dalí they had was at least a dinger. Could have used a Jaycek Yerka though, in my opinion. To be fair I didn’t spend too much time with the super minimalist conceptual stuff nor the bang me over the head with the social justicey political stuff. When I go to art museums I like to look at art, not read. Unless that is something particularly tickles my senses in execution in which might spark my conceptual curiosity, which does happen too! Regardless, definitely worth my time there ( I could have been painting! ) and I had a memorable experience with both the pleasurable and not so pleasurable. Admission for their collection was free and the view at the top was glorious!! They also had some decent sitting area for people who got bored with the art too. Didn’t donate any money but got some cool art postcards at their pricey gift shop. Lineage: Tom Flowers and Family Gallery Review

At the opening reception for Lineage: Tome Flowers and Family, I was surprised to find that the show was the first that I had been to which showcased the artwork of multiple relatives in one space. Given that our main gallery space in the Furman art building is not particularly big, the seven artists featured in the show had to find a cohesive way to organize their work despite their stylistic differences. From traditional painting to sculpture, metalwork, IPhone photography, and digital art, each artist brought their own unique style. Coming from a family of fewer artists (and the occasional doubt that comes with the belief that is it hard to be an artist), one of the most encouraging and refreshing things about the show was getting to see the family’s enthusiasm for art during their gallery talk. Art was not just an individual passion for each of them as it was also a point of connection and creativity that brought them closer together.

    Out of all of the artists at the show, I felt that I connected most with Tia Flowers and her work in digital sculpture and 3D modeling. On display in the gallery, Tia had multiple character studies and digitally sculpted character models, most of which she expressed were done during her time at SCAD. Having just graduated from the university in the last year, Tia is the closest in age to the Furman art seniors and she was extremely helpful in answering questions and offering advice when my friend and I got the chance to talk with her. Although I am still not entirely sure where my artistic career will go after graduation, I have always had an interest in character design and potentially pursuing animation. Having gotten to talk with Tia and exchange contact information with her, I was also happy to see the art department expanding the types of mediums it exhibits beyond more traditional subjects such as painting and sculpture. Hopefully these events can continue in the future!
