Wild pigs found with blue meat in California spark alarm
(link to article) dated August 4th 2025
A wildlife trapper in Monterey County made an unexpected discovery after capturing a series of wild pigs in March of this year. While processing the animals, the trapper found several with blue-tinged muscles and fat tissues. The bizarre discoloration is a result of exposure to diphacinone, an anticoagulant rodenticide that is often dyed to identify it as a poison, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
YIKES
I am sorry but WHAT?? Here I am judging people who eat rabbit and now I'm aware people eat horses??? Like ¿¿¿¿¿??????
I don't know how to tell ya this but which animals are ok to eat and which aren't is quite arbitrary and mostly depends on how near-and-dear to us those animals are. Plenty of people in other countries could be horrified with you eating beef, for example, or bacon.
If it's meat, it's meat. It's edible, no matter how much it makes us cringe because of the personal relationships we may have with specific animal species. It's good to have personal boundaries on what you would or would not eat, but also good to acknowledge that they are personal boundaries, not global ones.
a not-so great morning
I thought it was a good day today until I walked into the kitchen to a morbid scenery of blood everywhere on the counter, running down the shelves dripping into a puddle on the floor.
My boyfriend was still asleep, so it was unlikely that he had murdered anyone. After a few minutes of disbelief, I remembered that I had defrosted the neck of a deer that my boyfriend hunted and turns out that the bag it was in had a huge hole.
I spent all morning cleaning up the kitchen and the rest of the day so far cooking that damn thing down into a ragout. (Which was at least amazing and I can write down the recipe if anyone wants it. I used almost all home-grown ingredients and herbs)
Local Game Store
A year or so ago, a store opened down the street selling local game. While no saru is sold, snippets of hakubishin, and kyon are available (top to bottom). We purchased some enoshishi (wild boar) ribs and fillets and will see how they cook up in the big oven...
