This uh plays Moira’s “absolute zero line” someone needs to fix that.
Gamepedia, an alternative Wiki Farm to WIKIA (now unfortunately named FANDOM), was bought out by FANDOM(TM) when it purchased Curse Media from the Amazon corporation in December 2018.
For lack of a better word, ex-WIKIA users who forked from WIKIA because of the diminished control and moderation over the wiki sites hosted on FANDOM (formerly WIKIA), and intrusive/malicious ads, are right back in the exact same circumstances they originally thought they escaped.
FANDOM, formerly WIKIA, is moving to monopolize the Wiki Farm space and given their notoriety over the years, that’s pretty much likely to happen despite efforts of wiki editors who move away from that environment. Gamepedia was probably the only Wiki Farm space (that functioned as a hub) that was a legit competitor to wikia.
This is disheartening, really.
That post about the doom wikis remind me that there are at least two Halo wikis. I wonder if they're in a similar situation?
A quick search on the independent Halo wiki confirms the suspicions. They even went as far as to mention the acquisition of Curse Media by Fandom (a.k.a. Wikia) last year for an undisclosed amount.
Yes, you read that right, Wikia bought Curse, and by doing so, they also bought Gamepedia, which (coincidentally enough) hosts a vast number of fan-maintained Wikis that actually moved from Wikia years ago because of their bullshit. One of them being WoWpedia, perhaps the first fanmade Wiki that made the move from Wikia to an independent host.
I had a post prepared last month but somehow I lost it and I never bothered to re-write it again, but yeah, this happened a month ago and naturally people got super upset about Curse Media’s acquisition.
(And for those of you that might ask “But WHY are people so upset about Wikia?” Please refer to my post that I reblogged a few hours ago. Feel free to also make your own research about fan-maintained wikis that moved from Wikia and - last but not least - form your own opinion about the subject).
Thankfully the real DOOM Wiki was not affected by this acquisition because they’re hosted elsewhere independently, but it still feels like a really weird and suspicious move because of everything that has happened with certain fan-maintained wikis that had their reasons to move from Wikia many years ago.
(And why not say it, it's extra weird when you start reminding yourself of who owns Wikia and start wondering how they managed to buy Curse Media from Twitch (the previous owners))
I just found the best gamepedia page, the commentary is wack
It is our great pleasure to inform you that FANDOM and Gamepedia have officially launched their official Discord Server!
You can join the server by following this link: http://discord.gg/Fandom
What’s up with the MTG Wiki?
The site’s been broken for some time now, but it’s frustrating now more than ever. Any ideas?
I just made some contributions to Zelda Wiki on Gamepedia.com, check it out!
A small fill up of a citation needed for Komail’s title as Prince, after I just watched a Youtube Let’s Play of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker where Quill’s text box specifically states Prince Komali.
