pro prison leftists are so funny to me because i'll say something like "perhaps it is inhumane to send people to knife island where they must compete in the knife games" and someone will respond, thinking they've destroyed my argument, "I get not sending drug users to knife island, but are you really proposing we don't send (whispers) ...pedophiles to knife island? what else would you have us do with them?"

You cannot be this dense. You cannot be doing the same thing you just accused other people of. News flash: THOSE ARE THE BAD CRIMINALS! Either you want no prisons at all, meaning the rapists and murderers are free to roam, or you want prisons to keep them locked up.
Rapists are statistically unlikely to even be charged with a crime, let alone imprisoned for it. If the purpose of our prison system is to keep murderers and rapists off the street, it's fundamentally failed.
I have no idea how I'd feel about prison abolition if prisons were actually places that kept "bad people" away from the rest of us instead of sexual assault slave labor camps for anyone the state or cops are feeling irked at, but that's not the system we have and I see no reason to argue policy based on ideal implementation instead of actual implementation.

Anyways, rapists and murderers should be kept away from the general public, and if prisons were exactly as bad as you said the solution to that problem is not "destroy all prisons and just let them roam free."
My own kind of nuanced belief, is that I'm for SOME prision reform, but not just "do away with it all together", but more like if a prisioner is going to get fled or parole, the law should give them SOME exprience of the outside life before leaving the jail, to kind of guild them back into normal society, there is a problem with prisoners doing crimes again, as they have no exprience of normal society.
This is coming from a tumblr post where someone explained Norway prision life, however what the tumbler described was not what prision was like in Norway.
