Delightful though it was to watch the very first daffodil start to open, it was not long before Algy began to feel that perhaps the half-frozen ground was really just a wee bit too cold for comfort in the area of the tail feathers…

And so, bidding a temporary farewell to the emerging flowers, Algy flew over to his favourite bench, where the old, lichen-covered wooden slats always provided a perch that was warmer and more congenial than any other in the garden. Not that Algy intended to perch exactly, for when the weather was fine the bench encouraged a lazy sort of lounging which even a fluffy bird found hard to resist.

Hopping up onto the seat, Algy leaned back on the slightly less comfortable iron arm rest and settled down to indulge in a wee bit of winter sunbathing… although owing to the very low temperature of the air, which remained only a few degrees above freezing, it was really more a question of light-bathing. But no matter what he called it, the brilliant sunlight was exhilarating, and it wasn't long before Algy began to sing again, joining in with the local robins who were engaging in a Sängerkrieg in the nearby trees and bushes…

Various Miscanthus cultivars (eulalia, elephant grass, Japanese silver grass) and other species have been used to create an ornamental grass garden at Goodnestone Park, Kent. This grass species produces a display of flowers in late summer and into autumn in a range of shapes and colours.
