Watching Killjoys for the first time: Reckoning Ball
And then there was nothing to be done for it. The order had been given, and honor bound them to obey.
Game of Thrones - Prologue
I started redoing some of my favorite A Song of Ice and Fire drawings as a way to get my watercolor pushups in.
Let's start with the Night's Watch patrolling in the Haunted Forest. This one was a struggle, mostly because it was a night scene... with horses.
But you don't get better by doing easy exercises.
Either way, I had to fix a lot of it in post. I think it would have better if I'd stuck to monochrome. The warm browns of the horse stuck out quite a bit before I muted them.
In fact, it was enough of a struggle that I missed my biggest mistake until after I finished it... Will should be the one riding in front, not Ser Waymar!
the agot prologue is so good. you meet three brothers of the night’s watch: gared, who compares ice and fire for the first time in the series, trying desperately to get through to his nepo baby boss; will, the first in the series to witness the power of the others; waymar royce, rich boy with an attitude problem, desperately out of touch and inexperienced, and the first on-page victim of the others.
class is highlighted: royce is dressed and armed decadently. he was sent to the wall purely for honor’s sake, since his family had too many sons. in contrast, we learn that will was sent to the wall as a prisoner, as penance for poaching a deer. his only other choice was death by execution. both him and gared are dressed shabbily in comparison to their commander, carrying crude weapons.
we also get our first taste of HONOR, a pesky concept which plagues readers until the very last page of the series. the reason gared and will can’t tell royce to fuck off is because he outranks them:
“And then there was nothing to be done for it. The order had been given, and honor bound them to obey.”
every single one of them dies as a result: will and royce directly, and gared indirectly when’s he executed for abandoning the whole ordeal. it also brings him to the foot of one mr. eddard stark, lord of winterfell, who is of course HONOR-BOUND to kill him for his desertion. in front of his ward-hostage and 8-year-old son, of course.
on their way back home, the stark execution party happens upon a gaggle of direwolf pups, the mother of which was GORED by a STAG…and the rest is history.
