Food is one of the basic needs of human beings, aside from shelter, clothing, health and education. We are exposed to food everyday, from the moment we wake up to before hitting the sack. Food is everywhere and we, human beings just cannot resist it.
But what about when we have more than what we actually need? It’s been said that anything that is too much, be it food, wealth or love is not good and may be considered as gluttony.
Gluttony is defined by Wikipedia as over-indulgence and over-consumption of food, drink, or wealth items to the point of extravagance or waste. The keywords are OVER consumption, OVER indulgence to the point of EXTRAVAGANCE or WASTE.
Considering this definition, and in associating gluttony with food and drink, over consumption or indulgence and extravagance or waste are too broad and subjective. Over consumption depends on a person’s appetite (maybe) while extravagance or waste depends on a person’s financial capacity.
Therefore what is considered as too much may be just enough for one person and that what is enough could be considered as extravagant to another.
Some readers may ask – Is gluttony a sin?
There is an article online about gluttony being a sin most Christians ignore. To answer this, I refer you to the article in consideration of readers who may have other beliefs or faith. As to whether it is a sin or not depends on one’s religion or belief.
Have you seen any of those challenges aired on TV where a person eats a big burger or a large plate of salad in xx minutes and another person takes on a challenge of beating the xx minutes of the first person, only to get a shirt or a token in the end.
People don’t realize it but aside from the shirt, the person who joins these kinds of challenges also get health risks for free like high blood pressure and high cholesterol. In my personal point of view, challenges like these are definitely gluttony!
These days, food is one of the most photographed subjects posted in social media. In the advent of smartphones and easy access to internet connection, it has become a habit (*guilty) for almost everyone to take a photo of their food once the waiter sets their orders on the table. Click and post, that’s the first step before eating that sometimes, we forget to say grace before the meal.
Personally, I like taking photos of my food because I like capturing how yummy it looks before I even devour it. The food presentation, when done really well dilates my pupil and sometimes make me just want to stare at it. Also I take a snapshot of food so I can use them in my food reviews in Zomato.
Food porn refers to photos of food, usually close up used in blogs, advertisement and social media; it’s a glamorous presentation of food. The photos are enticing making every person who sees the photo drool, crave and want to rush to the restaurant and try it. But wait! There is more to it than meets the eye. Not all food porn are really as good as they appear but of course, taste differs from one person to another.
The more expensive the food is, the higher is expectation on its taste. Why do average income earners shell out big bucks for food they cannot afford? Is it to satisfy their cravings, for social media posts or for an amazing gastronomic experience? Whatever the reason is, is it worth the price?
A friend once joked about spending too much on food saying that it will never be worth it because regardless of the price you pay, they all end up in the septic tank. By doing so, the septic tanks becomes your piggy bank. The joke is gross but there is truth to it.
For the love of food (and experience), no matter what people may say, spending a little more than you can afford on food and on one-off occasions is not at all bad. It does not necessarily mean that you are living beyond your means, it is about enjoying the finer things in life that you can only dream of. It’s about enjoying life while you can. So don’t feel guilty the next time you spend a good sum of money on food.
Love for food and health – QUICK TIPS!
Love for food is the kind of love you should not deprive yourself with. Food nourishes the body and gives energy but it is always good to remember these:
Eat healthy. For long term benefits, be guided by health tips from experts on how to consume food and what kinds of food are best for the body.
Skip the junk. Nowadays, a lot of people have become fast food junkies because of the fast paced life they live. It’s easier to grab a burger or pizza for dinner than cook real food. Once in a while, it’s fine but think of the long term effects of eating junk food and fast food takeouts.
Don’t be a stress eater. Just like stress, eating can either keep us alive or kill us. Don’t eat because of stress because you are likely to consume more food and chances are the food you will indulge in would be junk foods, sweets and soft drinks. Find joy in eating and savor each moment while eating to give your body time to relax and calm down. Gulping food while stressed just adds more stress to the body.
Cheat once. Yes, we should do our best to maintain a healthy diet but we are also entitled to cheat once in a while. Go ahead, have your cake and eat it too! In the stressful life we live, we deserve a little treat. Take note of the keyword – ONCE. By once, I mean once in a while, like once a week maybe, but definitely not once a day.
Good food is healthy food. Food is supposed to sustain you so you can live better, not so you can eat more. Some people eat to live, and some people live to eat.
