I know we tend to (understandably so) focus on the “you look gorgeous, Gault” moment when we look for a basis for a deeper relationship between Lucienne and Gault, but actually the scene that sticks out to me the most in that regard is when Dream banishes Gault.
We see how defensive Lucienne can get about Dream when she and Corinthian encounter each other at the end of "Imperfect Hosts," but there's absolutely no hint of any similar animosity when Lucienne addresses Gault in this scene
and as Lucienne watches Gault and Dream argue with each other, I'd say she looks...quietly distressed, like it pains her to watch these two particular people go head to head.
It would also make this scene more upsetting for Gault herself, since Lucienne--a former friend or lover--seemed to be siding with Dream instead of her, and of course Gault wasn't present to see Lucienne later stick up for her.
Then there's the way Lucienne disagrees with Dream's decision to banish Gault and directly tells him so. That can definitely be chalked up to just Lucienne's innate moral compass, but it would add an extra dimension to that conversation if Lucienne and Gault actually were close at one point.
I think there is an unspoken agreement in the Dreaming that every time Dream has had library sex, Lucienne gets to fuck Gault on his throne when he’s away
the little catch in lucienne’s voice as she says “you look gorgeous, gault” is EVERYTHING to me

Prince Lucienne is known across the galaxy to be a protector of children. But will she be able to forgive Gault and Jed for being aliens?
Prince Lucienne scowled at the cluster of children in the corner of the Judgment Hall. They should not be subjected to the trials she was going to be hearing today. She called the bailiff and instructed that whatever case they were involved with should be heard first.
In response, the bailiff brought to the stand a tall, proud woman with perhaps the darkest skin Lucienne had personally seen. She gave her name as Gault, and did seem to be trying to reassure the children despite her situation.
The prosecutor stood forward and announced her crime. “The woman Gault is found guilty of treason against the planet of the Dreaming.” Lucienne raised her eyebrow as Gault looked as astonished as she felt.

"What brings you here, Gault? Not that I am not glad of your company," Lucienne hastens to add because it is true, and she would not want the dream to feel unwelcome.
"Are you?" Gault asks. "You never seemed to like me much before."
Gault visits Lucienne in the library to clear the air. They end up doing far more than that.

Hmmm okay thinking about Lucienne and Gault exes-to-lovers. Lucienne’s comment of “a Nightmare who, I must say, I never trusted” to Dream could be taken as a kind of bitter, revisionist-history sort of sentence—“I should have known better than to trust her, so I’m going to pretend I never did.” (I’m really curious as to how Gault being a Nightmare would have impacted her and Lucienne’s relationship at the time. Was there any kind of taboo on it? How are Nightmares treated in the Dreaming’s society? Would the other Nightmares have felt like Gault betrayed them by becoming a Dream, maybe thinking she’d think she was better than them? Much to think about.) Then, after Gault is turned into a Dream, Lucienne seeks her out and apologizes and they make up. And maybe make out while they’re at it 😚
(Also like. Would Gault have felt like, “oh Lucienne only loves me now when I’m more ‘acceptable’ to her since I’m a Dream”? That would be difficult to process!)
