Not feeling great today, but the #oneadayplant show must go on. Gaura lindheimeri (White Gaura) especially for my dear friend @herveybrookes since we spoke about it yesterday. . The first thing to think about when working with Gaura is that they are short lived. Generally each plant is only any good for a couple of years. After which, it may survive, but typically will decline in quality and would do better to be replaced. I recommend treating it like either annual bedding, or a biennial removing when it dies back at the end of the second year. . Until it succumbs to the frosts, you should expect it to flower its little socks off! Slender spikes of small white flowers from pink buds. . Masses (easily hundreds on most plants) of flowers are produced from late spring onwards. It is a valuable, long-season plant. Quite variable height between 45cm (18”) - 90cm (3’). . Rarely, do people focus on the individual beauty of each flower, instead, often looking at the plant as a whole with hundreds of these little flowers dancing on a breeze. . Full sun and well-drained, but fertile soil are a must. Wet soil will drown it and shade will cause it to stop flowering. Otherwise it is easy and trouble free. . Lots of varieties on the market. Some good, others less so. I still rate ‘Whirling Butterflies’ and ‘The Bride’ highly. I also really like ‘Freefolk Rosy’ for a pink flower from the wonderful @hardysplants . A gorgeous little plant that is well worth growing. Gaura lindheimeri ‘Rosyjane’ PBR (HARROSY) (Beeblossom) today’s #oneadayplant . Raised at Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants Nursery in Whitchurch, Hampshire and named after the fantastic Rosy Hardy, this gorgeous, floating summer’s moment is a true beauty. Like all Gaura, it is free flowering, kind of ethereal and utterly delightful. This form has a picotee pink edges to otherwise white-very pale pink petals. Adorable! Just like Rosy really. . Full sun and well-drained soil are the keys to success with Gaura. Without both you generally will have a poor plant.
