I think, for me, my chronic condition is a bit like being a porcelain ball jointed doll.
Except...maybe the person who strung my joints together forgot to add the felt to keep them from grinding, and perhaps they didn't quite understand how stringing worked, so I can feel my joints barely holding properly. Some too tight and some too loose.
I can pose and move but something is always just a little wrong. I feel as though any moment my strings will break free or snap and in an instant my pieces will be all over the ground, cracked and broken like a dropped plate.
But then I got my chair, my beautiful chair, and my gloves that brace my wrists, and I can move again. I don't feel as much danger when I pose my improperly strung joints. I dont feel as much pain.
But people don't like it. "You were better before" they say "You ruined your beauty" they cry with indignation.
And they don't see that maybe now, finally after years of being afraid, I don't feel a deep haunting fear of shattering.
