Was rewatching ROTK and felt like something was wrong, then I realized... Gandalf didn't have his big naturals 😔
This needs to be said:
Build Divers Re:Rise IS GUNDAM!
Holy fuck! This series started off really slow. Little did I know it was all to build momentum. Typically anything from the Gundam franchise with “Build” attached to it’s title is hard take seriously, because at the end of the day they are essentially just toy commercials to promote Gunpla.
What I feel makes them the most enjoyable are the throwbacks, cameo’s, Easter eggs, etc. from the more mainline series mixed in with heavy Shounen anime vibes. Which is great, if you just sit back and enjoy what’s happening on screen. Once you start bringing up the plot points and themes behind the story decision making is where it tends to fall apart. All of the great battles become nothing more than just selling the latest Gunpla model kit, with highly exaggerated reasonings backing them.
They tried to change up the formula by incorporating very cliché anime VRMMO tropes into mix with Build Divers. Where everything takes places in a VR fantasy universe, with furries included. It was not very well received, because you could tell they were just trying to do what was popular. All in all it was poor attempt at trying to copy similar anime stories like Sword Art Online and .Hack. But y’know, with Gunpla/Gundam battles. It all felt very out of place. Don’t get me wrong, it had its moments, but other than those moments. It was easily forgettable.
About a year after the conclusion of Build Divers, they announced that there would be a Second Season. Promising that they wanted to do something “different”. Basically going back to the drawing board with what they were trying to with the original Build Divers series and appropriately attaching Re:Rise to the title to show the change. One of the promises from the new head of the project was a deeper and fulfilling story for fans of Gundam.
So began Re:Rise. A pseudo continuation of the story introduced in Season 1, but with a new cast and different perspective from the major events that occurred. The first thing that most viewers noticed right away was that it was indeed very story heavy. Maybe a bit too much. With the lack of a traditional battle of the day episode/s, it had a noticeably slower pacing. In fact, this one was focused a whole lot more on the characters than the actual Gunpla/Gundam battles right from the get-go. I honestly kept with the story because it was indeed very different, and I was curious on where the hell they were going with all of it.
Then it happened. About a dozen episodes in, basically the halfway point of the series. Things really started falling into place story wise. Everything new they introduced, in addition to tying in the weird plot elements of season 1. They made it work...but then...COVID hit. And the show went on hiatus for a while. I didn’t realize how much of an impact the story had made, until I HAD to actually wait for the next episode to air(which usually released every Thursday). But boy, when the series finally came back to its normal schedule. They didn’t skip a beat, and kept that hype train rolling.
Now after watching the latest episode(with only 1 more episode left, that airs tomorrow at the time of this writing). I find myself hardcore rooting for main cast. Probably more so than I have for any cast of fictional anime characters in a long time. Like hot damn! I’m thankful they decided to throw out the toy commercial aspects and give this series a more dedicated story telling. It’s by far the best decision Sunrise has made for the Build series.
I say this series is Gundam, because it has all of the core elements that every great mainline Gundam series had; Hope. That’s literally what Gundam is. Hope, and the emotional influence behind it and how it effects the characters within it.

GBN-BASE GUNDAM
