Here is a portrait of JG Thirlwell in colored pencil by gea*. It was commissioned by Yu Hirayama for the cover of Feeco Magazine (Soundtrack Edition). The Japanese publication includes an exhaustive biographical interview with JGT and is currently only available in Japan.

5.30.17 The JG Thirlwell : CHOLERA NOCEBO NY show at Roulette was a great success. All photos by Dustin Dis except b & w long shot by Dan Efram and prepared piano shot by JGT. Simon Hanes helped out on the prepared piano section of the piece, playing inside the instrument.

“Cholera Nocebo is a 50 minute electro-acoustic presentation performed with software and sampling, autoharp, prepared piano and small electronic and acoustic objects and instruments. By incorporating musique concrète and electronic sound along with live instrumentation, the composition is dynamic, cinematic and diverse with stylistic left-turns, often creating a tension between time and anxiety. Thirlwell was inspired to create a work incorporating live re-composition and improvisation into its structure, which could expand and contract fluidly with flow and spontaneity from pre-ordained building blocks of sound.

Thirlwell perfoms alongside projections of multiple time-lapse car journeys on the Long Island Expressway, providing the illusion of hurtling into a void. The accompanying projections culminate in footage captured during the blackout in Lower Manhattan in the aftermath of the Hurricane Sandy. The film was shot and edited by gea with additional footage by Sebastian Mlynarski, with Thirlwell behind the wheel.”

Ectopic Ents plans to release CHOLERA NOCEBO as a surround sound album in late 2017.

JG Thirlwell‘s Cholera Nocebo project will make it’s North American debut in a special surround sound concert at Roulette in Brooklyn on May 30 2017. Tickets are available here.

Cholera Nocebo is a 50 minute cinematic electro-acoustic concert, performed  with software and sampling, autoharp, prepared piano and small electronic and acoustic objects and instruments. It is performed in surround sound with a projection  of multiple time-lapse car journeys along the Long Island Expressway The film was shot and edited by Gea with additional footage by Sebastian Mlynarski.

Conceived as a “Pangaea” project, Cholera Nocebo is intended to be performed at least once on each continent. It has thus far been performed in Morocco at the Marrakech Bienale , Club Babylon in Istanbul, Stockholm at the Art’s Birthday Party Festival, the Lausanne Film Festival, Cafe Oto in London and at the Dark Mofo Festival in Hobart, Australia.

A 5.1 surround sound Cholera Nocebo album is being prepared for release on Ectopic Ents toward the end of 2017.
