A simple but effective little mod for anyone using a @varusteleka-fi Terava Jaakaripuukko as a bushcraft /survival knife,  creating a useful all in one emergency survival package .

A standard sized firesteel toggle fits well in the over large lanyard hole on these knives .

If you add a small 550 firecord tinder lanyard the cord sits on the back of the toggle and helps to create a nice fit inside the lanyard hole .

I finish mine with a ITW Nexus toggle end which allows for easy removal for striking on the Jaakari’s spine and have added gitd powder to the plastic clip for low light use .

Simple homemade firelighters .

Getting my stash ready for the next winter , these are made from 100% recycled materials the cardboard tube from finished toilet rolls .

Simply melt some old candle wax in a pot and soak a squashed flat roll in the pan , take out using tweezers ,allow to dry then cut up into strips .

These burn for around 1.5 minutes or if cut open to form a long taper more like 3 mins and are of course completely waterproof  great for adding to a survival kit or as a stove lighter .

Mint Stash .

 Polo mints make an excellent EDC .

The British ‘mint with the hole’ developed in 1939  , they tastes great  freshen breath ,give energy and could perhaps be used as an impact device if needed . Because the mints are hollow you could also stash small items inside the tube when traveling in hostile environments if required .

Recycled lip salve container with all the internals removed makes for an excellent and cheap AAA battery storage option  but could be used for other small kit too .

Pro-tip:

If you strap a headlamp to a water bottle or clear jug of water, it will kick out light harder than a medium fire. Also, it’s a really great solution if you are in an area that doesn’t allow fires. Personally, on a lot of backpacking trips, I don’t build fires because I don’t want to waste the energy it takes to collect wood, and more importantly, put it out.
