This year, Toshikana was dressed as an Oiran, a high-class courtesan in old Japan. She even used her own hair for this hairstyle!

Great news from Gion Higashi: Next year, two new Maiko will debut from the Man Okiya! You can see them at the top of the picture, sitting across from their older sister Masano.

It’s been almost exactly 2 years since Masano, their last debut, had her Misedashi, and she has been developed very well and already looks quite mature. Masano will probably be promoted to the status of a senior Maiko early next year, ahead of their Misedashi.

The two girls will also be the first two Maiko to debut with Masami as the okaasan of the Man Okiya and Ochaya. I remember that Masami said in an interview a while back that she wanted to have at least two more girls at her okiya, I’m happy that she found them!

Their geimei and the date(s) of their Misedashi aren’t known yet, but I expect it will be in the first quarter of next year, since it wouldn’t have been made public if it wasn’t already sure that they are to debut.

Last year, Gion Higashi had three Misedashi (out of which 2 Maiko are still active), and this year they had two Misedashi and two Erikae, and there are already two Misedashi planned for next year, so right now, it’s looking good for them!

October 2018: Geiko Fumino (Fukushima Okiya) of Gion Kobu dressed as Ono No Komachi for the Jidai Matsuri.

Ono No Komachi was one of the most famous poets of Japanese history, who was born between 820 and 830 and died around 900. She was said to be extraordinarily beautiful and became a symbol of Japanese beauty.

She wrote waka poetry, which is a relatively broad genre that encompassss classical poetry in Japanese. This is so notable since, in the first few hundred years of Japan's existence as a country, all of their poetry was written in Chinese (kanshi poetry). Waka didn't come into existence until the 7th century.

What makes Ono No Komachi even more impressive and important is that she is the only female member of the Rokkasen, the six poet gods, who were named by famous poet Ki no Tsurayuki to be the most notable and influential poets of the early Heian Period.

Ono No Komachi is actually the most well-known poet of the Rokkasen today, and most of her poems are melancholic and deal with anxiety, solitude or love. It’s also extremely difficult to translate her poems into different languages, since she often used words with several different meanings, which often gives her work a lot of ambivalence.
