Oh my gosh. So...there's a newer ship that's been going around on twitter, Jewel x Gemerl or Gemwel, and the fanart I've seen of it is super cute. My brain decided it wanted to write something. My take on it if you will. I've never written Jewel the Beetle before now and I'm not well versed on her character, but everyone that has read it so far said I did a decent job. Jewel enthusiasts I would love your constructive criticism. But it's so cute guys!! This might have just become one of my favorite ships. Right up there with shadomega and surge/wave! Regardless, enjoy my take on this very interesting ship.
Ship - Gemwel (Gemerl/Jewel)
Words - 1,760
With the gentle chime of a clock striking five, Jewel the Beetle leans back in her chair and sighs. Finally, her shift is over. As she rubs her eyes, her fingers part to reveal the large amount of paperwork she still had to file for the restoration. With an annoying groan, she wipes the sweat off of her forehead and picks up a pen.
She does not need to do this right now since her allotted work time is up, but more documents needing review will come in tomorrow and she is already so far behind. While drinking the last of her tea she had on her desk, she gets to work reading and signing documents. The less she thinks about how much she has to do, the easier it will be to file one paper at a time.
The pen scratches letters across the pages in a fury as she desperately tries to keep herself busy. As long as she continues working, her exhaustion won't catch up with her. Just how does Sonic do it? She takes a break for a moment and stares at her empty tea cup with longing. If she gets up to retrieve more tea now, she won't want to sit back down. By pushing it to the edge of her desk and out of her mind, she leans closer to the paper in front of her blocking out everything around her. She takes a deep breath and continues writing.
“I can do this. I can do this.” She chants repeatedly to the empty room, convincing no one and least of all herself. Five minutes later and her forehead clunks against the desk, lightly denting the paper where she makes contact. Jewel closes her eyes, letting the cool touch of the table and paper ground her psyche momentarily. Oh how she wanted her bed. But what lay between her and her bed is a mountain of paperwork.
Just when she thought she might drift to sleep, a knock on the door startles her upright, with the piece of paper comically sticking to her face. “Oh! Come in!” Through her words, she blows the paper off and smooths its edges with a shy grin spreading across her face.
The door swings open and a pair of unmistakable mechanical boots step through the door frame. The robot maneuvers himself and his three prongs through the large stacks of paperwork covering Jewel's restoration office. “Good evening, Jewel.”
“Oh! Gemerl! To what do I owe this pleasure?” As the robot’s third eye scrutinizes the area, Jewel can't help but feel slightly embarrassed at her predicament. She is sure she looks quite disheveled and exhausted. Gemerl is known for his keen observation and heightened awareness that the Rabbit family has taught him throughout his time living with them.
“Vanilla sent me on an errand. I am to retrieve a document, however…” His voice drifts off as he continues surveying the clutter around her office.
“O-oh! Which one!?” Jewel interrupts him politely and reattains her work smile. She jumps up from her desk while wobbling slightly then hovers over to a stack of paper in the corner. “I’m pretty sure all of the papers Vanilla submitted are in here somewhere! Let me just…” She thumbs through the papers and Gemerl moves to stand beside her.
He tilts his head to one side slightly and points towards the bottom of a stack of papers near a filing cabinet. “There."
“Oh…” Jewel takes a deep breath and hides her disappointment in herself. “Thank you.” Her fingers fly to the area that Gemerl had pointed and tries to take the document out, but finds that she is not strong enough to remove it from the stack. Angrily buzzing her wings, she is about to start dropping lobs of paper from the top onto the ground, when Gemerl’s hand places itself back on the stack of papers.
“Query: may I assist?” His eyes stare unwaveringly up at her and the beetle suddenly feels a slight twinge of anxiety about how the rabbit family robot might view her at this very moment. She is not weak, however, she knows her limits and what she can and cannot do alone. Sadly, all of what she has been experiencing and putting herself through for the past few days has been well beyond her skill set. Perhaps she did need some help, in more ways than one.
With a defeated sigh, Jewel descends back to the ground. “Yes please…” She watches with a frown as Gemerl picks up the large stack of papers with ease, allowing Jewel to remove Vanilla’s documents and trudge back to her desk. “Okay. Last one for tonight.” She talks to herself as she plops herself back into her chair, picks up her pen, and pushes the prior document aside in favor of the one she holds.
The robot walks up to the side of her desk, looking around a little more before resting his gaze back on the beetle. “Observation: your shift ended one hour ago."
Jewel gives a nervous giggle and motions to the amount of work surrounding her. “No rest for the head of the restoration! Everyone is counting on me, but I will admit I do need sleep.” She fights her body to keep down an oncoming yawn. “I’ll just finish Vanilla’s document and call it a day. You came all this way after all! I’d hate to send you back empty handed.” She flashes her business smile at him once more, and returns her attention to the document.
Some clinking on the edge of her desk gathers her attention to her empty tea cup and watches with surprise as Gemerl brings it over to the kettle on the far side of the room to refill it. “Oh! Th-thank you."
Gemerl nods at her from over his shoulder then walks back over to hand the cup to her gently. She reaches out to accept the saucer it sits on after after dropping the pen in her hands. She lifts the china to her lips and sips the contents down in big greedy gulps. She really has been wanting some more tea. Before she knew it, it is all gone and she presses her lips together to keep any hiccups or burps from escaping. She takes a quick break by leaning back in her chair and sighing with relief.
“You are welcome.” Gemerl nods and stands ominously at the side of her desk. “How else may I assist?"
“Oh!” Jewel reassumes her earlier writing position and continues filling out Vanilla’s document, unsure of what else she might need. “I’m not sure. I know it should only take a few more minutes for me to finish this-” A small shiver runs itself up her shell and the beetle brings her arms closer to her chest to conserve body heat.
“Scans indicate a rapid drop in body temperature. Suspicion: exhaustion.” Gemerl stares in her direction, his expression unreadable.
Jewel laughs softly in defeat. There’s no use hiding how she feels now. Her eyelids droop and the corners of her mouth curve downwards. “Maybe a little bit…but…” She allows herself to yawn this time, sets her elbow up on the table, then rests her cheek against her fist as she flips the page over. “I’ll be awake enough to finish this document first."
Gemerl says nothing and turns around to quickly walk to the other edge of her office. She has barely enough energy to cast a glance at what he’s doing rummaging around in the corner when he’s already making his way back over to her office chair. She thought he might set something on her desk, but instead finds that the thick blue blanket she stores in that very same corner has been draped over her shoulders.
Slowly her body temperature begins to increase and she can't help the small smile that spreads across her face. She cranes her neck to look up at the reborn gizoid who stands inches away from her chair. “Thank you."
He nods in acknowledgement. “If these actions do not alleviate your current symptoms, then sleep will be required. This unit does not mind returning tomorrow for the finished document."
Her hands grip the edges of the blanket as she daydreams about her bed, but the last few unfilled blanks stand out on Vanilla’s document. It would only take a few minutes. She takes a deep breath and steels her resolve, before returning the pen to the page. “No, I can do it. You gave me the tools so I could power through. Thank you!” She flashes him a genuine tired smile and rushes to finish the last few fields before Gemerl can so much as respond. “Aaaaand done! Yes!” She celebrates, but her vocalization turns into yet another yawn.
“Well done.” Gemerl congratulates her and claps gently with his metal hands. “I will make sure Vanilla is aware of the great lengths you took to finish it."
Jewel hops out of her chair leaving the blanket behind to grab her things. She beats her wings furiously to keep herself afloat. “No need for that! I was happy to do it for a friend.” Using the last of her strength for the night, she buzzes around the room, collecting her things then motions to Gemerl to follow her out of Restoration HQ. After giving him the item he had come for of course. Once she comes in contact with the outside air, she shivers again and pulls the coat closer to her.
Gemerl’s jet engines ignite and lower to a gentle hum as he hovers in the air next to her. “Query: will you be alright returning to your home by yourself?"
Jewel looks down the road with blurry eyes and rubs them tiredly. “I…no…I think I need some help. Would it bother you?"
Gemerl extends out his hand as she grasps it to steady herself with. “Not at all.” He responds and his fingers clasp around her hand gingerly.
With a tired nod, Jewel allows Gemerl to lead her to her home, weaving slowly through streetlights and above power lines. It is not until he brings her to her doorstep that he lets go and bids her goodnight.
“Thank you Gemerl…” She yawns as she fiddles with her keys and manages to get her front door open.
“My pleasure.” He nods. “Sleep well.
“Thank you…you too…” She smiles sheepishly and listens to the hum of jet engines taking off into the night after the door softly closes.
