❛ GLAD you could make it, agent hill. ❜ breathy response, uttered during short window of opportunity as his knuckles met a man’s gut with precise amount of force to send him FLYING across the perimeter. a beat. the soldier collects himself ; bringing the comm closer to his lips once more. ❛ what took you so long, hill? traffic held you up? ❜
❛ was doing my nails captain, those things take time. ❜ fingers wrapped tightly around the grip of her gun. the commotion on his end reaching her ears through his ragged words. she steals a glance towards the secured door before focusing on the controls ahead of her ❛ remind me again why i’m here instead of romanoff. ❜
& STEVE.
no matter what face was put before him, the FIRST concern in the war wrought general’s mind was to assess her person ; sharp, trained gaze briefly scanning her figure for weapons. a BRIEF moment where habits kick in, and before he can allow himself to really TAKE IN her presence and what it meant, he looks away from her yet again. parker received a nod from his superior, the silent request to leave them alone. he had no need of a guard, even if she was a damn skrull. and if she wasn’t –––– much more reason to have no one else around.
the emotion registered on her face could mean EVERYTHING and NOTHING. it feels real, with an element of truth to it that dreams didn’t. jesus, when had he last dreamed? he used to see her there, in his sleep, but that too had been a LONG time ago. the memory of peggy carter was a distant one. he had grieved far too many people after her ; the count had become blurry in his head. steve hadn’t dreamed in ages. much less indulged in thoughts of a HAPPIER time ; in those endless what ifs that inevitably came with the image of peggy.
therein laid the question ––– was this true? and if it was, did he WANT it to be?
❛ fell into the water. seventy years on the ice. ❜ which, after so many years outside of it, had only become common knowledge. it’d been a while since steve last had to tell it to another soul ; perhaps it was why it almost felt flat in his tongue. oh, and he was still ever so SUSPICIOUS of her appearance. ❛ wake up in the twenty first century, now you ––––– ❜ i went to your funeral. ❛ you are the one who’s not meant to be here. ❜ said the man out of time, who’d stopped feeling that way. ❛ tell me the TRUTH –– is itreally you? are you really peggy carter? because up here, we’ve got ways to find out if you’re lying, and if you catch you on the act, i promise you ain’t gonna like it. ❜
the years spent mourning him FELT like a lifetime ago. just being here - standing directly in front of him. made agent carter more confused than she ever has been. her eyes were scanning him, MARKING out everything about his body language, even though this may be the man she once thought dead. she still PANICKED. she still had to make sure her own life wasn’t at RISK.his question just raised more suspicion. of course it was REALLY her, who else would she freaking be? and did he honestly threaten her. if the situation wasn’t bad as it was, peggy would PROBABLY start laughing.
❝ a-am i REALLY peggy carter? of course i’m BLOODY me, steve. ❞
she soon slowly began to realize what he had stated before. the word had started to REPEAT in her head. the twenty first century? there couldn’t be ANY way that she had arrived an entire century from her own; the thought of even leaving behind all those people, everyone that she ever cared about, caused the agent to STUMBLE back, her hand reaching for SOMETHING, anything to grab onto.
❝ s-steve... i’m... i’m not going to LIE to you. i am really bloody scared right now. i have no CLUE what the hell is going on. i was... i was in the damn lab with howard and now... now i’m STANDING in front of you... and i don’t how the hell happened... or w-why... but s-steve... ❞
