Elephant Micah “Genericana”
Game changing music right here.
Atmospheric remix of early songs -- well sort of -- hard to explain, definitely something new -- exploration of old ideas that has turned into something beautiful, space music.
It might require some history with Elephant Micah. I am not so sure -- the new songs / remixes / reinterpretations are their own thing -- escaping down dub rabbit holes but still holding onto their essence. “If I was a Surfer” is a basis for the Surf tracks, “Still-life blues” for the Life tracks, for Fire...I am unfamiliar but I love it.
It is definitely something new from Elephant Micah -- further exploration of the recent output with his Portal to Palmyra stuff that is on Soundcloud where he is recreating old songs, doing covers of Court & Spark songs (”Sundowner, You” one of my favorites - someone get M.C. Taylor on the horn and tell him he needs to redo that).
It is vital, sad, important, beautiful, chill, and glorious.
Also there is something about him doing it all on antiquated and dying equipment - kinda like that Horseback (Jenks Miller) album that was done on a dying synthesizer of some sorts. So you got that too.
Let’s just say that it has jumped up my list of 2018 releases -- and this year has not been a slouch. But hearing the clangy noisey “Life A” brings me life and smiles and that is what I need right now, what I need all the time. So yes, game changing music right here under the guise of noise experimental comfort music.
Perhaps the most lyrically talented artist we’ve featured here, Ben Black has returned with a dope new solo joint, this time collaborating with NJ producer Analog Jam. Ben is known for multi-layered, multi-syllabic bars with precise, yet rapid-fire and unorthodox delivery, and his writing and vocal work on Dig It demonstrate how well he has been polishing his skills since his last project, Genericana. The instrumentation on this new track is sparse but far from run-of-the-mill, accompanying his lyrics amazingly well and offering a welcome escape from more conventional contemporary hip-hop releases.

This Flashback Friday we have another even earlier offering from North Bergen, NJ based lyricist Ben Black. This nearly 2 year-old promo video for his song "Sides of a Spectrum" is a great example of the profundity of the lyricism found throughout his first EP Genericana and his unique vision and approach to the craft which will surely be built on in his upcoming project Cycles. Check out the Jersey representer's astounding rhymes in the vid; you'll be glad you did!
