Genetic Manipulation
Genetic manipulation wasn’t unheard of to the galactic community. It was incredibly common due to its usefulness; increasing lifespans, replacing cancer-afflicted organs, fixing genetic diseases and disorders, developing crops that can withstand harsh weather and pests, even a minority of the more eccentric beings even using it to create exotic pets of all manner of colours and patterns.
This is why meeting the humans was such a shock. Some had tails, some wings, some scaly skin, spines, venomous fangs, horns and thick skulls, others had extra organs just to breathe fire, extra fur, some could see in all manner of light wavelengths, some could bite through bone, some had pharyngeal jaws and there was still more. It was as if someone took the same bipedal ape-like base, threw it into a pit of body parts, and kept what stuck.
At first, we'd thought they were several species that co-evolved, which was quickly discovered to be false, what with how incredibly similar their genetics were. A second hypothesis was formed—that they experienced extreme sexual dimorphism. However seeing the variation within a single sex, that was quickly proved false as well. In the end, we were so busy looking for zebras that we ignored the horse; that humans were genetically engineering themselves.
As I’ve said earlier, it isn’t unheard of to interfere with your DNA—but it was never taken this far. We’d only ever edited things that caused unnecessary hardships.
It was...a concerning discovery, to say the least. It was clear they’d considered whether they could before whether they should. And when talks for them to join our galactic community began, it became even more clear how little they contemplated the ethics of genetic meddling; they loved to play god.
The second they’d asked what treaties and regulations we had in place for super soldiers, true fear set in. We could only hope that that was the line for them. That at the very least super soldiers were their limit and that they were checking if it was the same for us. But looking into the eyes of one of their diplomats—a human who had willingly allowed themself to be changed into this behemoth before us—made it clear the answer wasn’t one we’d like to hear.

Genetics are complicated, hardly understood by elves. The Black Swan's plans are specific and complex - not just anyone will do. Besides, whose first thought is making a child partially out of alicorn DNA?
It takes more than one version of the Moonlark to get it right. the first never make it to life at all, though eventually some do. Perhaps, if this is a dark world, they are killed. Perhaps Calla saves them; perhaps someone insists that they be allowed to live.
The first Moonlarks aren't as stable as Sophie. Their Telepathy is too much for them to handle. Some are left in the Lost Cities, battling what went wrong in their genes, and others make it to the Forbidden Cities before the Black Swan declares them not good enough. These Moonlarks are different, always, grappling with the parts of them they don't understand and never being whisked away to a magical new life. They must realize they're different, someday. And what do they do then? Try and work it out, even when everyone they know grows old as they stay the same as ever and they begin to realize people are getting suspicious.
They never get to figure out what it is. They never find magic. And they never get to warn the last Moonlark of the truth: that they have all just been tools all along.

Quay says that while other scientists around the world were mostly interested in examining the genome of SARS-CoV-2 in the samples uploaded by the WIV scientists, he wanted to see what else was in the samples collected from the patients.
So he collaborated with a few other scientists to analyze sequences from the samples.
“We started fishing inside for weird things,” Quay told The Epoch Times.
What they found, he says, are the results of what could likely be contamination from different experiments in the lab making their way into the samples, as well as evidence of Henipah virus.
“We found genetic manipulation of the Nipah virus, which is more lethal than Ebola.” Nipah is a type of Henipah virus.
The Epoch Times asked Joe Wang, PhD, who formerly spearheaded a vaccine development program for SARS in Canada with one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, to verify the finding. Wang is currently the president of NTD Television Canada, the sister company of The Epoch Times in Canada.
After examining the evidence, Wang said he was able to replicate Quay’s findings on the Henipah virus. He explains that the genetic manipulation of the virus was likely for the purposes of vaccine development.
Documents released by the Canadian government state that the WIV’s intended use of the virus samples sent by Canada was “stock virus culturing,” which in simpler terms means storing the viruses while keeping them alive. Genetic manipulation would not be within the scope of this description
The firing of Chinese-born scientist Xiangguo Qiu and her husband, Keding Cheng, from the National Microbiology laboratory (NML) in Winnipeg has been the subject of much controversy in Canada, with opposition parties pressing the government for more details on the case, and the government refusing to release information citing national security and privacy concerns.
Qiu and Cheng along with several Chinese students were escorted out of the NML, Canada’s only lab designated at containment level 4—or P4, the highest level of biosafety—amid a police investigation in July 2019. The two scientists were formally fired in January 2021.
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), which is in charge of the NML, said the termination was the result of an “administrative matter” and “possible breaches of security protocols,” but has declined to provide further details, citing security and privacy concerns.
