I never post on Tumblr anymore. But I tested the first few elements of my Genji last night!

I knew that I wanted to cosplay Genji the moment I first saw his design when Overwatch was announced. Everything about him as a character appealed to me, but I needed to make sure I had enough time to do the cosplay the way I wanted to. I wanted to make the entire thing out of foam, with minimal reliance on a morph suit. It took me about 6 months, but I was able to debut him at Youmacon in Detroit, and then make some minor upgrades for Katsucon.

The cosplay is constructed from different thicknesses of EVA foam, with a few bits of worbla. The torso is made from overlapped pieces of foam that are all attached (meaning I can't sit down at all while wearing it), and then the arm and legs pieces slide on and attach to the morph suit worn underneath via snaps. The visor of the helmet is a metal mesh that can be seen through but still provide ventilation. All of the LEDs on the inside of the suit are wired to a single battery pack in the chest, and translucent foam allows the lights to shine through. The sword is constructed from a single piece of wood for the handle and spine, with EVA foam and worbla for the details, and an LED strip lighting up plexiglass for the blade. 

Seeing the reaction that I get from other congoers when I wear Genji has definitely been the best part of it. People are so excited to see Genji, and I definitely get stopped for pictures more in it than any other cosplay I've made. The best story from wearing it though is definitely at Katsucon when I got to shoot with Jessica Nigri for a little bit while she was wearing her Mercy costume. A photographer friend of mine who knew her was able to make it happen because he knew I was wearing Genji. Jessica is someone that I've looked up to as a cosplayer for a long time, and I still can't believe that it happened. She was so incredibly nice!

Overall, cosplay has affected my life more than any other hobby. I've met so many amazing people and had so many great experiences because of cosplay. I'm always looking forward to the next con and constantly thinking about the next cosplay I want to do, and how I can continue to push my skills and create things that I didn't think I could before. Cosplay has allowed me to express myself creatively in ways that you can't via any other medium, and I hope that I can keep learning new techniques and finding new characters that will allow that creativity to grow.
