Moving on from big ol’ cats, I’ll be drawing and painting some other big ol’ creatures, like these elephants. • I recently went to a dinosaur exhibition where they had all these bones and fossils and life-sized models and things, and I thought about how crazy it would have been to be able to see those huge monsters roaming the earth. • Then I got to thinking how crazy it is to see animals like this walking around today. These guys are huge and their trunks and tusks are ridiculously cool. Really just made me appreciate all the beauty and wonder we’ve got here on Earth. In honor of the random whale shark sighting off the south shore today! 💙 . . . Whale sharks (Rhincodon Typus) are the most gentile of the giants. They are opportunistic feeders often gliding through the ocean looking for temporary food sources. Unlike most sharks, the whale shark is a filter feeder. This can occur in a couple different ways; one of which is ram filtration. During ram filtration, their massive mouths will open while they continue to swim forward. The water and food sources are pushed into their mouth (Nelson and Eckert 2007). Another method of feeding is active suction. This involves the shark actively opening and closing its mouth so it is able to take in immense amounts of water which is then expelled through its gills (Hoffmayer 2007). The #whaleshark has a very distinct diet of plankton, krill, and fish eggs. They play a huge role in the health of our ocean by maintaining their ecosystem and regulating plankton population.
