Partly semi-autobiographic, #NewGrubStreet by #GeorgeGissing revolves around the literary and journalistic circles of the late-Victorian England. The novel puts forth a contrast between two writers: #EdwinReardon, who wants to write artistically refined work but goes financially downhill, and his pragmatist friend #JasperMilvain, a journalist who prefers writing stuff that can sell well and satisfy the reader of that age. Showing the characteristics of naturalism, which was in vogue at the end of the 19th century when it was written, this #novel ends tragically and shows the crushing force of capitalism.
