I personally think that a lot of the reason that white americans talk and care so much about Irish reunification (and cared so much about German reunification) in comparison to Korean reunification or a one-state solution for Palestine, is because the Irish and German are white. And thus peaceful coexistence between the Irelands or between the Germany’s is seen as the natural state of things because they’re white, whereas the Koreas or Palestine being in constant conflict is seen as our birthright because we’re not. And I think about this a lot.

I legit thought that Kenzo Tenma from Monster was some German dude. 😂 😂 😂 before starting this series, all I knew was that it was about some doctor living in Germany who got caught up in some weird mess and that there’s these 2 twins who are integral to the story. I had no idea that it was about a foreign Japanese student becoming a surgeon… my only real beef with anime besides the over sexualizing of women, is that a lot of times, you can’t tell what race or ethnicity characters are. Don’t get me wrong, I love the art style of monster, which is really what had me intrigued by it from the start, but Tenma doesn’t look any different from his German colleagues. Europeans can have raven black hair and brown eyes too lmao. Now the Turks occasionally featured in the series (there’s a huge Turkish minority in Germany btw) actually look Turkish. They’re drawn with Mediterranean and west Asian features, with olive skin lmao. They literally look like they could be Turkish, Greek or Italian. I do think this series does a good job at capturing European populations and their diverse looks as well. Not all Germans are blonde and blue eyed lol. It just catches me off guard that Tenma just doesn’t look Japanese. At all. 🤣 I try to picture him having stronger Jomon/Ainu features rather than the Yayoi. Japan is made up of two major population groups and that’s the jomon (the Ainu are part of that) who originate from north east Eurasia, and the Yayoi, who came from what’s today’s China. So maybe Tenma is supposed to be imagined as more jomon looking? The way he looks could also be similar to Keanu Reeves who’s got some Asian admixture. Part of my ocd is obsessing over genetics and how people look. Ok I’m done. -_-
