@michaelreidberlin Today is "Tag der Deutschen Einheit" German Unity Day, that commemorates the anniversary of German reunification – when West Germany and East Germany were unified. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall on the 9th of November 1989, Germany's East and West signed a unification treaty on the 20th September in 1990. This Wednesday we belatedly celebrated German Unity Day at the ambassador’s residence. The party included food from each region of Germany, a Q&A session with four Olympic athletes who competed in Rio de Jeneiro this past summer, and music from the Bundeswehr Musikkorps and the U.S. Air Force band Max Impact!

Twenty-five years ago this week, Germany reached another milestone on the road to unification. On September 12, 1990, in Moscow, East and West Germany joined the four World War II Allies–the United States, Great Britain, the Soviet Union and France–in signing the 2+4 Treaty, or the Treaty on the Final Settlement With Respect to Germany. This treaty allowed Germany to regain its full sovereignty and thus cleared the path to reunification.

All summer long, the East and West German governments were taking steps toward unity. An agreement was signed for a common currency between the two countries. The parliaments were negotiating to see if German reunification was even possible. The 2+4 Treaty signified that last big step. On October 3, 1990, the Reunification Treaty was signed. Ever since then, Germans celebrate October 3 as the Day of German Unity.
