Grim Reaper! Mingyu
Can I request a Grim Reaper! Mingyu where it ends tragically?
A/N: Oof let’s hope Mingyu gets better soon!
Warnings: mentions of death, blood, and implications of some other dark stuff
rules
there were just three
just like the three fates in Greek mythology
there were three rules
1.) Do everything you’re told to do
2.) Do not question why or what you do
3.) Do not do anything unless you’re explicitly told you can
these were the rules Mingyu had always been very familiar with
after all his job was important
they called him a fallen angel
the devil
the grim reaper
one ghost even called him a bitch once
but he had no name
he was just one of the many shadows called upon to collect souls of those passed on the earth
he was one of the Faceless
Mingyu knew the rules very well
but there had always been one thing
a secret he kept
he had never been allowed to speak to the souls he was told to collect
but he couldn’t help it
when many were in disbelief
crying begging for their lost families still living
he couldn’t not speak
he couldn’t not comfort them
so while many of the Faceless as they were called
mindlessly collected the souls they were instructed to in silence
Mingyu kept their stories
with him
he asked them about their lives
tried to comfort them and give them last solace while he could
before sending them to the other side
he hated it
he hated everything he did
for who wants to hear the last stories of those never to breathe again?
but he knew it was his purpose
sometimes when he wasn’t on duty
he would open his journal
and for those who had gone
he took a moment to honor their lives
to read about their families and past
each one brought a pang to his heart
some of the journal entries would haunt him he knew
but he’d review them
breathe life into the stories on the page for just a few minutes
there had been Jake
a small five year-old boy
who had been killed in a car crash involving a drunk driver
Mingyu remembered that night too well
Jake had been sitting in the middle of the road
clutching a worn out stuffed bunny
Mingyu had expected the child to cry
many do
but upon seeing Mingyu
Jake simply reached his arms out
and let Mingyu pick him up
“Can I see my mommy now?”
Mingyu couldn’t help the tears that started forming in his own eyes
“Yes of course Jake, I’ll take you to her.”
there had also been Claire
she was 25
Mingyu had met her in the hospital
she sat on the edge of her hospital bed
staring down at her physical form
before noticing Mingyu in the doorway
“Ahh about time.” Claire said getting up
Mingyu simply nodded before saying “Do you have anyone you want to leave wishes for?”
she simply shook her head and took his hand
“You’re the only one to see me off.”
and they had walked together quietly to the other side
Mingyu shut the journal quickly
some days were better than others
some days his job was easy
some days difficult
but today something was off
something was very different
he received his assignment at dawn
surprised he picked up the name card
usually assignments for him came at sunset
a fitting time to wonder around as a shadow
bringing those to final peace
but the card
it came at sunrise
he turned it over in his fingers
“Y/N, 21 years old”
he frowned
and flipped over the card for cause of death
“Cause of death: unknown”
he nearly dropped it
how was
the cause of death...
unknown..?
picking up his suit quickly
Mingyu grabbed his journal and made his way to the location listed under the name
when he arrived he looked around
he was on a beach
the waves rolling gently over each other
before finally crashing down on the sand
and there you were
on the edge of earth and sea
feet tickled by the waves as you walked slowly further out from dry land and into the surf
“Stop!!!!”
Mingyu knew this was against the rules
but never had the cards
had fate
ever dealt him someone alive
he ran after you
but you knew
you wouldn’t die
you couldn’t
because you were a Faceless too
and Faceless do not die
you had heard of the many myths humans made about grim reapers like you
not all of them were that off
no you had walked into the surf knowing very well you wouldn’t die
because you still had a job to do
you had received a card this morning as
“Kim Mingyu, 21 years old”
you felt Mingyu drag you back by your arm
felt him pull you closer
into his arms
and held you
pulled you back from the surf
“Are you insane?” He yelled
you looked up at his face
“Kim Mingyu.”
“Yea…? Wait- How do you know my name?”
you pulled out his name card
and handed it to him
“I can’t die.” You told him “I just wanted to feel the ocean water, I’ve never done it before.”
he stared at shock at his own name
and flipped it over
“Cause of death: unknown”
he reached into his suit pocket and reached for your name card and handed it to you
you stared at it
“But I thought we can’t die.” You told him looking up into his eyes
brown
beautiful alive and very real eyes
Mingyu had a name
had a face, had a life
but here he was
his name on your card
“What does this mean?” He asked you comparing both of your names on the card
“I’m not entirely sure.” You said
“What are we supposed to do?”
you could see the fear in his eyes
you were sure you did too
“It’s not like we can actually die Mingyu, we’re Faceless. Our main purpose is collecting souls. We can’t die.” You told him taking his hand to comfort him
“Ah!” You felt a sharp prick and looked down at your foot
blood
a red cut from possibly a rock or broken piece of glass on the beach had cut your foot
but the concerning part was the blood
you’re not supposed to bleed
the pain intensified as the cut continued bleeding and your strength gave way
physical pain
another thing you had never experienced
you fell right as Mingyu caught you
holding you up with his arms
“I thought we don’t feel pain!” You started panicking, “We can’t bleed we can’t get hurt we can’t die!”
Mingyu looked frightened at the cut on your leg before picking you up to support you in his arms
“I don’t know what’s happening but it’s going to be ok.”
he helped you back towards town and found a convenience store with bandages
you sat on a bench waiting and when he came back he carefully dressed your cut
“I think we’re being punished.” He quietly said while wrapping your cut
“For what?”
“I broke the rules.” He sighed “and now I must be paying the price.”
you thought upon this
“I broke the rules too.” You whispered to him “I talked to them, you know the people and souls we have to collect. I know we’re not supposed to but.”
“It’s ok,” He quickly said looking at you, “you did the right thing.”
“But I broke the rules.” You said feeling tears well up in your eyes
he finally took you in his arms
giving you a reassuring hug
“It was the right thing to do.”
after a moment
of just being held by him
being comforted by someone who knew how difficult it was to do your job
you felt a tad bit better
“So are we mortal now?” You asked
“I’m not sure.” He looked around, “it appears that way.”
“So what do we do?”
“I guess we start living as humans.”
it was difficult transitioning
before you felt no physical pain
never got sick
never needed sleep
but soon you both learned humans need a lot to survive
like food and shelter
but you already had false identities to cover your work collecting souls
now it was just to actually find jobs and a place and settle
and Mingyu was there to help with it all
surprisingly he was good at cooking food
something you never knew you needed
ah so this was why people ate everyday
he was so good at it he got hired at a restaurant in town
and everyday he’d bring you leftover food after work
and you’d both sit around your apartment
eating and laughing together
it felt only natural
only he really knew the difficulty of transitioning from Faceless to human
and after a while
he became your happiness
his little shy grin when you complimented his food
and the little canine teeth he had that made him look like the cutest puppy when he smiled
as Faceless, you had only really known great grief, and anguish and guilt
but with Mingyu
the days were brighter
and the nights warmer
and the darkness farther away
he’d hold onto you at night when the nightmares came
when your memories caught up and the fear of dying caught up
he’d purse his lips
and run his fingers comfortingly through your hair
and press his lips to your forehead
“It’s ok. Don’t worry everything is ok.”
and for him
he didn’t have to live in the darkness anymore
see sadness and take people away from their lives
to take their souls from the earth
he relished in creating things
in living and breathing
and you too were his happiness
he couldn’t imagine surviving as a human without you
you weren’t exactly sure when
but you both learned the feeling of love instead of sadness
and you found it together
you had a nice job in town too
you got to teach little kids how to paint
and one evening you were closing up your little studio for the kids’ art
and started walking home to meet Mingyu
it was a cold night
and the sun was quickly setting
you wrapped you cardigan closer around you
when you heard shouting
it sounded like…
Mingyu
you felt your blood run cold
as your legs numbed from the cold
and your walk turned into a run and then sprint as you raced down the street
the apartments were on fire
residents were out on the street staring at the flames licking up the sides of the walls
where was he
no
no
no no no no no
“Miss you can’t go in there!!!”
you pulled back the arms holding onto you as you ran right up the steps of the building
right as the firemen pulled out a stretcher with
him
on it
words floated to your head about smoke and how a gas line blew
but you couldn’t hear any of it
you only stared down at him
and a card
a name card shimmered into existence in your hand
“Kim Mingyu, 21 years old, Cause of death: asphyxiation by accidental fire”
and you knew then
that this was your punishment
not the loss of immortality
not the loss of being a Faceless
but the loss of your everything
of your happiness
all because you broke the rules
you stood up shaking
tears streaming down your face as they zipped up the body bag
and out of the corner of your eye
you saw a shadow
a Faceless
as he walked away
and broken
you fell to your knees
and cried
MASTERLIST
model! Mingyu
anon requested: “ could you do one for model! mingyu? god, he looked like model in that one going svt episode in L. A.
so
honestly you love your job
you were a model at Pledis Modeling Agency
which was one of the best modeling agencies out there
they specifically worked with special designers
or hired by famous fashion designers to model their clothes
and figure out events and marketing
you loved it
the whole dressing up and walking down the walk with confidence
or the beautiful photo shoots for magazine spreads
it made you feel more confident than you usually were
it was helping you build your self esteem and you were really glad for it
they say you need to have connections to be in this industry and once you were in it, it was difficult
while it got hard sometimes
you were happy being busy
the whole hectic scene behind the venue area
where all the models were collectively running around changing as quickly as possible
and getting hair and makeup checked, fixed, and touched up
the whole process was chaotic
but beautifully chaotic
it made you feel like you were contributing to the bigger art of high fashion
and you made a lot of good friends too
the makeup artists would invite you for drinks after a successful fashion show or photoshoot
or you’d treat them
and just congratulate each other on a good job
and the after parties XD
the best
put a bunch of fashion models together at two am and crazy things happen
a lot of the models at Pledis were friends with you too
your manager called you one day
saying that your preparations for pledis’ winter fashion week were cancelled
and you were like “why?!?!?”
the winter fashion week was a big deal for the company
they got to parade around showing off all the beautiful things their clients made specifically for them
and it was basically a huge week long party
Pledis took it very seriously
but you weren’t going to do activities for it?
your manager explained that the company’s headshots had been seen by this designer in New York
and they had selected two models from the company to hire for their new line of clothes
and they had requested the whole deal too
magazine shoots
ad photos for billboards and a fashion showcase special event
as well as being the first models for the clothes
ever
your jaw dropped
a designer in New York!!!
this was an incredible opportunity too
your manager said the company was relying on you
and that your plane tickets and hotel room and everything had been booked and ready
you were super excited
the last time a designer specifically requested models
your friend got selected
and her beautiful pictures were seen almost everywhere
you were so proud of her
it was exciting to think you had a chance for that too!
but two models
you asked your manager about the other person
“Ah it’s Mingyu of course.” your manager laughed
Kim Mingyu
basically the biggest deal ever
as in he was freaking gorgeous
not a damn soul in the world could deny it
and while you thought all the models in your company were very good looking
Kim Mingyu honestly radiated beauty and everything a model should be
his tan skin
sharp jawline
even his gaze
it was no wonder he was the most requested for model from the company
one look at him and no one questioned it XD
he was always busy
while you had talked to most of the models at Pledis at least once before
Mingyu seemed really busy or reserved
kind of a mystery that everyone gossipped about but in reality had no clue
he never had time to stay for the elaborate after parties
a lot of the models at Pledis had a crush on him too
hard not to
but he was really mysterious
and he always had schedules from overseas designers
basically a man in high demand
and you
you were going to work with him
“You’re joking me” you say to your manager
“I’m not though.”
your manager raised an eyebrow at you
you were freaking out
Kim Mingyu was famous even amongst the famous Pledis models you knew too
you wanted to scream
but you were also super excited?!
like imagine how amazing it’d be working with someone at such a high level
you wanted to take it as a good learning experience to improve your own skills too
so
“Let’s do this.”
the flight to New York was really long
your manager said Mingyu would arrive later that day
and then you both could make your way over to the photoshoot studio
for the first set of pictures
and that you had free time until then
sightseeing ^~^
a must
you walked along the streets looking at the various tourist-y things
buying all the cheesy “I ❤️ NY” shirts XD
and magnets, postcards, snow globes
that way you could give them to the others when you got home
at one point someone even stopped you to ask if you were a Pledis model
you were super surprised but they recognized you from a photoshoot you did in a magazine
the magazine had been for formal event dresses
her compliments made your heart melt
and then soon
it was time to go to the studio
your manager drove you to the studio
it was a big loft area downtown
lots of tall windows
an entire wall made of windows in fact
and simplistic furniture
but the photoshoot set
you stared in awe at how beautiful it was
the designer had hung different cloths from the ceiling
the streaming silk and lace draped across the room
it was almost like an abstract modern painting
but with fabrics
the different textures and the way they flowed around each other
the colors were warm and complemented each other beautifully
but were also simplistic and not too busy
so it wouldn’t clutter and distract from the obvious star of the show
the clothes
the rack by the changing room held your outfits and you felt your jaw drop a second time
they were beautiful
the designer was indeed very well-known and high-end for a reason
you were quickly instructed to wear the first outfit and get hair and makeup done
when you were all dolled up you stepped outside
and as surprised as you were to see Kim Mingyu already dressed and posing in front of the photographer’s camera
he was even prettier in real life oh my god
he was even more surprised to see you
because you looked beautiful
stunning
he had to clear his throat and shake his head to focus
and then he accidentally slipped on a loose piece of fabric from the set and tripped
“Oh my gosh.”
you quickly ran to help him
“When they said falling for you, I didn’t know they meant it literally.” he laughed
the cutest little puppy grin on his face
you saw his little canines when he smiled
and your heart skipped a beat
“I’m Mingyu. Nice to meet you y/n.” he said sheepishly
“Nice to meet you too Mingyu.” You hid a laugh behind your hand
“It’s nice to get to work with you.” he said smiling again
“Me? Ah no the pleasure is all mine.” your turn to look embarrassed
“Let’s do our best.” he laughed
“Agreed.”
Mingyu was
for lack of a better way to describe him
the cutest dork
you didn’t really have expectations since you didn’t know him
but you did have this impression of him being this suave cool and aloof guy
maybe even a bit arrogant
maybe liked drinking wine in his penthouse apartment while watching tv
but when you were working with him
you ended up talking to him more and found out he was just the sweetest guy ever
since he didn’t really interact with other Pledis models due to his busy schedule
you got the chance to get to know him a lot better
“Yea I feel bad leaving my dog at home so that’s why I never go to after parties haha.”
“Oh you have a dog?”
“Yea! I have pictures of her on my phone.”
his home screen was him and his puppy
softest soft
and he said how he liked to invite his friends for movie and game nights when he did get days off
but of course
he talked about how much he loved his job
working with designers especially
because he loved putting together outfits himself
he liked the idea of coordinating outfits almost as much as he loved wearing them
and he loved the feel of nice clothes on his skin
he was really good at what he did too
despite that first trip when he met you and tripped
just the tiniest bit klutzy
you watched him get his pictures taken for the shoot
and he held himself so confidently
he looked so cool
and everything about him
was beautiful
his outfits
the way his eyes looked at the camera
you could see how much he loved modeling
and he was still so nice
thanking the photographer
then it was time for your solo shots
you were kinda worried bc Mingyu would be watching from the side
but he gave you two thumbs up
and so you took a deep breath
and settled your heartbeat and got into posing for the camera
and the surrounding worries melted away as you got into the zone
smiling beautifully and posing perfectly
Mingyu honestly was observing in shock
you were so so beautiful
and you held yourself perfectly too
as a professional he couldn’t deny how much talent you had
a seemingly dreamy look that was perfect for the dreamy photoshoot
right after you were done he went up to compliment you
“You’re so incredibly talented!” he exclaims
“Ah really? Thank you so much!” you said blushing
you thought maybe he was just flattering you
but after you were done with the photoshoot that day
he shyly tapped on your shoulder as you were about to leave
“Do you want to... talk about work a bit more? Over dinner or something?”
you checked your phone
it was 10pm
and you didn’t get a chance to eat because of the shoot
“Sure Mingyu.”
you both walked down the street in search of a good place to eat
“I can just call my manager to drive us around.” You laughed
“No it’s ok. It’s a nice night anyway.” He chuckled
“So... where do you wanna eat?” He nervously asked
you could tell this was a difficult question since most of the time your diets were restricted
“Well we can eat whatever and I won’t tell the company promise.” You winked jokingly
you watched his face light up as he teasingly winked back, making your stomach do flips
“Then I know just the place!” he responded
the burger restaurant was right on the corner of the block
and you both settled comfortably at a table
you hummed happily as you ordered
“Did you go to school for modeling?” Mingyu asked
“Hm not exactly...? I only started getting formal training when I entered the company, before then I really had no idea how to model.”
“That’s really amazing though, you’re a natural!”
“Ah thank you! How about you? How did you become a model?”
and it was so much fun
talking to him about something you both loved to do
and hearing how he went into the company after being casted
naturally
looks like his
and how he became really busy on his rise to the top
laughing over funny stories about his first few days as a model
how he tripped over and broke stuff
how he still sometimes trips over and break stuff
eating your food in comfortable chatter
when your phone rang signaling your manager calling
it was already nearly midnight
time flew by
you both waited outside for your managers
and when your manager pulled up
an eyebrow raised
“Tell me you didn’t eat here.” your manager chuckled
“Of course not!” You and Mingyu said at the same time, then bursting into a fit of giggles
“Shhhhhh just one time!” you laughed
“Mmkay I’ll turn a blind eye this once.” your manager smiled
Mingyu bowed respectfully at your manager
“I see you met Mingyu. How’d the first day shoot go?”
“It went well! It was so much fun.” you responded
after
you waved goodbye to Mingyu and headed back to the hotel
and after you had showered and laid down on your bed
you couldn’t help but let your thoughts drift off
to Mingyu
getting to talk to him and work with him
and you smiled unconsciously
“Ahhhh! What to do?!?” You laughed grabbing a pillow and hugging it
you fell asleep with a grin on your face
the week was spent busy
you and Mingyu finishing all the photoshoots
you had the couple photoshoot where the photographer would tell you to casually lean against Mingyu
or lay your arms casually on his shoulders
and while it was awkward at first
there was a natural chemistry the two of you had for working together
and even the photo prints sent to the CEO of pledis made the both of you proud at how they had turned out
the shots with Mingyu’s face inches apart from yours made you blush looking at them
but it had turned out really nicely
the showcase had been the evening before and your last official business in New York was to meet the designer
you met Mingyu in the lobby to the design studio
he was wearing a long warm parka
matching his casual look
yet expensive feel
you looked at the color of his shirt
it was a royal blue
the exact same shade as your sweater
you both had matched unintentionally
“Are you copying my style?” Mingyu teased
“Oh hush and let’s go.” you laughed
the two of you walked into the elevator and ascended to the design studio
where you got to shake hands with designer themselves
they thanked you for beautifully wearing their outfits and invited you both to the opening evening dinner hosted for investors in the new clothing line
you accepted
and Mingyu did too
“Wait this means I have to buy a dress?!?!?!”
so you waved bye to Mingyu and decided to go shopping :)
finally settling on an elegant royal blue embroidered two piece dress
the same royal blue matched to your sweater and Mingyu’s shirt from earlier
and spent the rest of the afternoon getting makeup and hair done for the dinner party
as if you had anyone to impress ;))
your thoughts kept going back to your many conversations with Mingyu this past week
how his smile made you think he honestly fell from heaven
and just how kind and caring he was when talking about his friends
it was driving you crazy
now you get why everyone seemed to be drawn in by the guy
this weird heart fluttering thing
when evening fell it was time for the dinner party
all the girls were staring at Mingyu in his suit during the party
trying to fathom how such a good-looking man came to be
but as soon as you nervously walked into the room
it felt as if the whole world hushed for a moment to take in how beautiful you looked
and indeed, Mingyu saw how stunning you looked in the royal blue
the long skirt portion of the dress lightly being tousled by the movement of your walking
so that the fabric lightly settled in around you
and his jaw dropped too
boldly he walked up beside you and gently linked your arms with his
“Can’t leave you such a beautiful person without an equally good-looking date, am I right?” he chuckled
“Equally good-looking? Please Mingyu I’m waaaaay cuter.” you tease
even though your head was spinning over him calling himself your “date”
the evening flew by with him by your side
joking in comfort and just talking and having a good time
at the end of the event
Mingyu lead you out onto the terrace area of the venue where the party had been
to just look out onto the city lights
before
“Hey y/n….”
“Yes?”
“You’re not dating anyone right?”
you blush before answering
“Not right now.”
“Good,” he said “Because I like you and I think that if you to go out with me, we’d probably be the most envied couple out there.” he quickly blurted
you laughed
“Why?” you asked, “Is it because we’re models?”
“Nope it’s because you’re beautiful and kind and I’m charming and handsome. The world isn’t ready for us.”
he turned towards you
so boldly
you stand on your tiptoes and press a quick kiss on his cheek
“The world is going to have to deal with me liking their golden boy, Kim Mingyu then.” you giggled
“So is that a yes to going out with me?”
“Oh boy Mingyu, was that the biggest yes ever.”
“Sorry, I was super nervous.”
“That’s alright. I’m freaking too.”
“Hmm, why don’t we get outta here then and have a first date?”
“Already?” you laughed
“Yes of course.” he laughed too
“I’d like that.”
“Burgers?”
“Yes that burger place we ate at our first night in New York.”
“Let’s go then!”
and he gave you his hand to hold as you both walked out of the venue and onto the streets
off on that first date
