My Favorite Children’s Book

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein didn’t touch me until I was an adult. In technical training for the military, I met a friend who had the cover of the book tattooed in all it’s glory onto the side of their abdomen. Had I read the book previously to the exposure through his tattoo? I can’t for sure say, though the classic it is I am sure a teacher once upon a time had read it to me. 

Years later, looking through a scholastic book flyer from my daughter’s daycare class, I came across The Giving Tree. The cover reminded me of my old friend’s tattoo thus their love for the book. I bought it, read it to my daughter and was touched immensely by it’s message. For me as a mother, I can relate to the tree because for my children I will give every last bit I have for their happiness and success.
