Supposedly, a woman of my age and weight should be able to bench press 74 lbs once. I can bench press 75 lbs six times. I tried 80 lbs and my body was all “hahaha...no.” Then I did my cardio workout. New goal: bench press 80 lbs once by the end of spring.
Staying Motivated to Work Out
Most of the time what motivates me to work out is the knowledge that if I skip it and cheat on eating well, I’ll gain weight again.
The times when I’m not motivated, I work out because it’s a habit. When it’s part of your daily routine, like brushing your teeth, you just don’t think about it, you just do it.
Working out in the morning works best for my schedule. I’ve built in some external motivation by having a gym buddy. We carpool to the gym. If one of us can’t go, there’s that feeling that you’re letting someone down and that can be a powerful motivator.
I need 8 hours of sleep to function. I wake up at 5:45 am Mon thru Fri to work out. Back that out 8 hrs, and that’s when go to bed. Obviously, there are exceptions and what gets me out of bed is habit and my gym buddy.
When I get home from work, I change out of my work clothes and set out work clothes for the next day. I also pull my breakfast and lunch together after dinner. This enables me to shower and go when I get home from the gym.
The weekends are a bit trickier. I go to the gym or go running around 10 am. Sleeping in is a treat, but I make sure that I don’t skip my workout.
When we’re on vacation, we do a lot of walking and use public transit. I’ve already quit drinking alcohol and am in the habit of eating smaller portions of food that is better for me. These habits carry through vacation. In fact, I almost always break even or lose a little weight on vacation.
So really, the key is to make working out a habit and that will carry you through when motivation isn’t enough.
