A local card shop is running a Pride event in two weeks where you can put two commanders together without it having the word "Partner" on it. My husband made a Baldur's Gate deck with Karlach and Shadowheart as commanders [link] (which is amazing and so GAY 🏳️‍🌈)

However, I decided to make a slight modification to my current naya Dune deck by adding Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen! [link]

Commander 2019 Character Spotlight: Ghired, Conclave Exile

First C19 Brew!

I was sending a friend spoilers from the Twitch video with the C19 spoilers, and they said Ghired’s Belligerence isn’t great against tokens... but tokens notoriously tend to be (yeah, a 20/20 Indestructible token and other big-back tokens exist, but they are not the norm) lower toughness creatures.

Step one of making Ghired’s Belligerence better is making sure you have plenty of mana for it. It should be in a deck that uses at least a few token creatures, but this Sorcery sadly doesn’t have Convoke, so we have to look at other cards to help us ramp our mana. Battle Hymn does a great job of this, though with Ghired’s Belligerence being a Sorcery, it feels a bit haphazard to use an Instant to raise the mana for it.

There’s no rule that says Ghired’s Belligerence needs to stick close to Ghired, and any red deck with a token theme (eh, maybe Krenko doesn’t want it. The damage targets creatures, not players, and the idea of the deck is to go too wide for other players to keep up with anyway. Maybe for defense? w/e) could find some use for it. Brudiclad will reward you whether you take out a single 4/4 or four 1/1s, and will even give your new tokens Haste. Oh, and because Populate can only copy creature tokens, Brudiclad is also willing to change those creatures into non-creature tokens, if you happen to have a taste for that. Mechanized Production, maybe?

Sharding Sphinx gives you a lot of 1/1 blue Thopters ( :: obligatory thopthopthopthopthop noise here :: ). Maybe you’ve chosen something other than Brudiclad, but you still have Red/Blue in your color pie, such as Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain. You can use Ghired’s Belligerence to take some of your Thopters out of the sky (maybe on your second main phase, after you get new ones... and perhaps get a lot of mana to cast the Belligerence from Neheb, the Eternal) and then use the Populate to make copies of your best token. Maybe you’ve made a token duplicate of Sharding Sphinx, or a non-legendary (thanks, Helm of the Host) Neheb, or just a regular token of Titan Forge’s titans!

Maybe Ghired’s Belligerence needs some set-up to be good... but isn’t that what brewing is about?
