You know how a while ago there was that reddit thread about "Is Jack Abbot real" from someone who, halfway through watching the show, was wondering if he was just a figment of Robby's imagination or whatever
(But like... Dana does tell Robby that he's on the roof, Mel does engage with him, it's nonsense)
I've been trying to figure out if there's a way to write something where that is the case, that would start out like
Jack Abbot was dead: to begin with.
you know, all The Christmas Carol and whatnot.
EDIT-- i did write it, it's on my AO3 now <3 Haunting the Narrative
He's either a ghost in the hospital, killed in some senseless car crash (like Mr. Orser, ofc) and after Adamson died, the veil between living and dead thinned a little and Jack slipped out as Robby was breaking down and now can't figure out how to go back, how to give this guy a break
Or he's a ghost of some Army physician that Robby met when he was working with MSF, they'd run into eachother a few times and then it was Robby's job to keep him alive and he couldn't and the guilt is what keeps Jack there
Either way. Jack hates that he's here, because he's pretty sure that he makes things harder for Robby and that's the last thing he wants, either way he now does what he can to keep Robby sane
(not that Robby makes it easy on him)
And Robby's taken to projecting some of the things that he's not good at onto Jack, the better part of himself that he needs. Maybe it's a little of Jack reminding him what he should be doing, like a little angel on his shoulder
He needs someone who can actually listen to Samira and teach her, encourage her, but she's too much like himself and so when he manages to do that better, he replaces himself with Jack since he doesn't think he ever could, his expectations are so low for himself
He needs someone to talk sense into himself as he's working on Leah, as he's doing too much, as she's dead already, but if stops himself then he's giving up and letting Jake down, so he imagines Jack telling him so, imagines Dana desperately looking over at Jack to come deal with this when she was actually looking at him like that
He needs to encourage Santos after she's done a batshit procedure he's still in shock, reeling from the rest of everything today, so Jack's the one who urges him to go coach her through the end of the REBOA, to scold her aloud since it needs to be said but quietly encourage her since she's been killing it today, actually
(he needs a little relaxation and Jack does what he can, in ghost form)
And Jack fills in the parts that he has to play, because this living doctor needs him, and he does what he can to keep the man alive because he doesn't want him to have to join him on the other side so soon
Issue: I can't figure out how to make this end not depressing as hell, so it'll stay unwritten for a while longer unless i can figure it out
One last Haunted Mansion AU note is that I know for a fact Jack and Nana die from murder...or at least Jack does.
He's decapitated and that's why he carries around the hatchet he has. It's the thing that killed him, ironically enough.
As for Nana, dying from heartbreak feels fitting. She's strong as hell so it'd take a lot to take her ass out but discovering the body of the love of her life is def enough to put her down.
And if not from heartbreak, then maybe literal heart break where she was caught off guard and hacked in the chest so she covers the wound with her red flower bouquet as a ghost as a sort of symbolism for the blood but if she lowers it, there's a gaping hole.
It's a haunting matching wound to go with Jack's decapitation wound.
My friends’ daughter drew me a special Artist Trading card because I said I particularly liked the picture she drew of their late dog, Jack. Honestly, Ghost!Jack is objectively adorbs.
I drew her an Eldritch Horror Pie Slice in return.

Summary:
Mac is up at three in the morning, just getting a glass of water when a shadow in the living room nearly scares him into an early grave and he stubs his toe on the kitchen island.
“Fuck!”
“You got a potty mouth for being such a pretty boy, kid. Gotta say that surprised me at first.”
“What the-“ Mac blinks, once, twice, but the guy is still there, looking at him with a crooked grin and like he can’t believe that Mac is failing this hard at being an adult. Mac’s brain reboots quickly and he looks around for something he can use as a weapon, because he’s a goddamn secret agent, and Desi would never let him live it down if he got killed by a burglar while in an apartment that isn’t actually his own.
The one where Jack is a ghost, Mac is slowly losing his mind, and Matty is a mystery wrapped in an enigma.
@nevcolleil I think you wanted to be tagged for this? There were other people as well, but I lost the original post. Will add the tags if I find it again.
“Today we are here to investigate a rather peculiar case---”
“Aren’t they always?”
“Well more so than usual. Surely you heard about Seán William McLoughlin’s supposed suicide back on Halloween of 2016?”
“Supposed? The guy cut his throat on camera!”
“Well an old friend of his, Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, all so known as Pewdiepie has made recent claims to be haunted by his ghost. We’re going to go check it out..”
