#Repost @talkingbaubles •Last week I lost the silver Georg Jensen ring my mum had given me for my 18th birthday. I have worn it Every. Single. Day since then. We're talking nearly 20 years now. If I wore another ring out, I would come home and put it back on. I wear it swimming, to bed, in the shower. I Never. Take. It. Off. And then last week it vanished - literally and almost instantly. One minute it was there, a permanent embellishment to my permanent 10 fingers. And then it wasn't. I couldn't breathe, I didn't understand and I was, to put it very mildly, distraught. All day I felt it's absence and had to stifle this rolling tsunami of sucker punching sobs. It was strange to experience such a measure of grief for a small, inanimate object and to observe the intensity of my reaction to it's disappearance. It's more than simple sentimentality: jewellery holds identity and memory and experiences and says things about us that we might not otherwise be able to articulate. It can be powerful, when it's not being playful. So when my husband came home and had the strange instinct to check inside the fingers of the bloody loofah gloves that hang in the shower and FOUND IT I cried all over again - relieved and enlightened and reconnected back to a part of myself. Jewellery has come to define me in so many ways.
