Bars were far from Maria’s typical hang out, but she’d been such a homebody lately that it was difficult to say no to the invitation of a coworker. Going to White Lies felt dangerous, but she didn’t know how to explain that without sounding like a legitimately crazy person. At least Belial didn’t seem to be bartending, which was a small mercy.
She was early. She was always early but this time she was even earlier than normal since she’d come from the church rather than her apartment. Slim fingers tucked her dark hair behind her ear as she found herself a place at the bar and tugged out her phone to text the coworker who’d invited her out.
I’m here. I’m early, but it’s crowded so I’ll try and scope us out a booth so we don’t have to sit at the bar.
Maria set her phone on the bartop, looking around for any open booths without much success. Friday night at a bar. What the hell was she thinking? The bartender came by and she decided to go ahead and order while she waited. “Gin Rickey please, with a sprig of mint,” she said, sighing when boy stared at her blankly. It was an old fashioned drink, hardly popular anymore, but surely not that out of fashion. “Gin and soda with a squeeze of lime and a little sugar, add a bit of mint. Please.”
Her phone buzzed on the bar. Maria, I’m so sorry - my car won’t start, I’m stuck waiting on AAA. Raincheck? Sighing, she texted back quickly that it was no problem, not to worry and to let her know if they needed anything. If only the text had come before she ordered, she could have just left. Now she was stuck waiting on a drink that probably wouldn’t even be right. Why had she agreed to go out on Friday the 13th?
