Happy Hatch Day
a lil fanfic about what happens to the gith egg after my first playthrough with a tav.
Dale was making her way down a quiet country road, enjoying the sunshine and supposing this was too risky a sort of local to encourage the worship of Cthulhu, when a loud cracking sound came from her pack. She frowned, there was nothing in her bag that should be cracking except- oh shit.
She set her bag on the ground and pulled out the githyanki egg she had saved from death at that creche a very long time ago. She hadnt been sure it would hatch, but the baby had seemed still alive in there, so she'd been carrying the egg around in case she came across a creche in her travels. So far, shed had no such luck.
Now she was holding a wriggling egg, and a tiny, spiked fist was pounding against a rapidly cracking green egg.
She sat on the ground just as the little baby gith broke free of its shell, egg goop seeping into her lap. Gross.
The baby wasn't too different from other newborns she'd seen. It was just extremely big and fat. Which made sense since she was dwarf and it was a gith, and it had spent a very very long time in its egg.
Now Dale has a fat baby she did not know how to feed. She checked if it had teeth. It did. Ok then. Probably like a baby bird.
After some trail and error, Dale got the alien baby settled and fed, and wrapped gently in her travel towel, the softest, baby sized thing she had.
Then. It hit her. She has a tiny alien baby she was responsible for. Cthulhu. She and Shadowheart has barely discussed this. They'd only been married a few months. They'd agreed children sound ok, but definitely not right now and animals were way better. And now they had a baby. It...was probably too late to find a creche considering how zealous most gith were. And she definitely shouldn't just give it away without discussing it with her wife.
Cthulhu. Dale really did not want to be responsible for a child yet. She'd already delt with half raising her siblings for her parents. As the insurmountable idea of parenthood faced her, all Dale could say was
"I wonder if this is how my parents felt when they had my sister Salt"(they had been teenagers at the time).
Finally, Dale's brain kicked into gear, and she realized this didn't mean she and Shadowheart had to raise this giant fat adorable baby together. Not that she was totally opposed. It was just. Too soon. She was only 52 after all. Hadn't Halsin said he opened an orphanage or something? Yes. She would turn around and return to the homestead and show Shadowheart and her parents this baby and then probably take the baby to rethwin to see how it liked Halsin. Yes. She needn't panic or plan yet. In the meantime, the baby needed a name.
Weren't gith from the stars? She remembered Lae'zel being very proud of that. And well, even if she didn't end up being it's mother, she was the one who saved it and took care of it until it hatched, she wanted it's name to have something to do with her culture. She smiled. Yes, she had the perfect name. Nice and traditional.
She opened her mouth, and in her native tounge of abyssal she said," Happy Hatch-day, the-void-looks-back"
