Today, for my latest walk with a Ramblers Scotland group I returned to one of my favourite glens in the whole of Scotland…..Glen Tilt. Perth & District Ramblers were great company, guiding us up the rougher edge of the glen and then returning via the glen road back to Old Bridge of Tilt. I think we were all a bit stunned when the sun came out after what seems like weeks and weeks of dreich east coast murk, and enabled us to actually sit down in something approaching t-shirt weather. Wonders will never cease!

Perth & District are the 14th group I’ve walked with since becoming Ramblers Scotland president last year. There are an impressive 54 groups in total (which I’m trying to work my way around before my time is up!), walking all over Scotland, all year round, week in week out, with a wide range of grades of walks on offer from coastal ambles to multi-munro or multi-bothy trips away. Perth have over 200 members, and have walks every Wednesday and Saturday. Glen Tilt gets progressively narrower as you reach deep into the Cairngorms - the estate road becomes a track, and then becomes a single-track path. I was therefore surprised to encounter a 4x4 up there the other week while I was out on my bike -  it wasn't going much faster than a walking pace as the track was so dicey. What a place to work!

For this month's Walkhighlands article I found inspiration in the most unlikeliest of places.....a rain-soaked stone garden between two car parks in Edinburgh! What I found there took me on a trip into the Cairngorms, walking in the footsteps of the great James Hutton......a Scot whose 18th Century theories about how the Earth was formed turned conventional wisdom on its head.

"We find no vestige of a beginning, and no prospect of an end" :)

Biking out of Glen Tilt this afternoon - it's a long glen stretching northeast from Blair Atholl deep into the Cairngorms, and gets progressively narrower in its upper reaches.  Today I pedalled 11 miles or so up to the picturesque Falls of Tarf, sat and had tea & cake.....and then pedalled back again :)

A journey up beautiful and historic Glen Tilt on a warm summer's day.

The track from Old Blair to Falls of Tarf is a looooong one to walk, but use a bike and you gobble the miles up quickly.  Just goes to show how accessible some of our most remote and stunning places really are in the summer.

Bitesize Ben - Access all areas

Another wee film from Glen Tilt, and another episode in Scottish history.  This time prompted by the beautiful Bedford Bridge at the Falls of Tarf, which was installed with the help of the Scottish Rights of Way Society in 1886 after a young man drowned there.

In Scotland we're fortunate to be able to roam our beautiful countryside freely, assuming we do it in a responsible manner......but it hasn't always been that way.  Our access rights have been hard won, so please don't take them for granted!
