Martin Luther King, Jr.: Unraveling a Co-opted Narrative - A Journey through the Multifaceted Social Justice Warrior
Martin Luther King, Jr., a towering figure in the American Civil Rights Movement, has become an icon whose legacy is often distilled into a sanitized narrative. Over the years, the complexities of his beliefs and the full extent of his activism have been overshadowed by a simplified version of his story—one that emphasizes a dream but often neglects the depth of his commitment to social…

Top apps for passive activism
you want to make a difference, but don’t know how to get your voice heard? I compiled this list of apps for those who don’t know where to start. The best part is, even if you live in a rural community, like I do, you don’t have to travel to be part of the solution🌱
Ecosia- this is the search engine I’ve been using for about a year now. I love it, I have the app on my phone, and I set it as my main browser instead of chrome. The beauty of this is that the ads revenue on it all goes towards planting trees 🌲 Generally you need 45 searches to plant a tree. So now you can make a difference just searching the web. And, it’s completely free.
Forest- This cute app is a pomodoro timer. You set the timer, stay on the app and it rewards you coins you can spend on planting real world trees. I use this every time I go to a yoga class (since I won’t be on my phone anyways.) I highly recommend this to students to focus on their studies. My only issue is it takes so many coins to plant a tree. This is the only paid app on this list, and it’s less then 3$.
Global Citizen- This is an app that lets you sign petitions with a tap of a button. It also rewards you for that, as well as doing different quizzes, retweeting, emailing, making calls and checking in. The points you get can go towards entering contests to win different entertainment.
Podcasts- I included this app because there are some excellent podcasts on any social justice topic you could be apart of. Whatever activism you’re a part of, you’ll find a podcast to stay informed, up to date and to get you thinking. The more informed you are, the more truth you can spread.
ActOn- Like global citizen, this is another petition app. But, it also shares curated content for you like news posts, fundraising, and protests. If you like to stay up to date, this will be a welcome addition.
Bunny free- This is a great app to take shopping, because it gives you information on a companies animal testing regulations. It lets you check data from the Peta shopping guide.
Cruelty Cutter- Another handy shopping app. You just scan the barcode, and the app will tell you if the product is cruelty free or not.
PETA: saving animals made easy- This app focuses on animal liberation, and saving animals. You get alerts about the latest injustice, and you can sign the petition straight from your phone.
Whatever form of activism you do, I’m proud of you for making a difference in this world and please stay safe. If you’re new to activism, and/or have questions, please feel free to message me, I’ll help you the best I can. Do you use any apps I didn’t mention that you would recommend? Drop them below and share them with others ☺️
Serious stuff
If you care about US politics and don’t live in the US you’re not actually thinking on an international scale. If you’re going to care about immigration issues in the USA, then you should care about the reason Hondurans are willing to travel through several countries on foot to reach “the land of the free”. You should also care about human rights violations in Libya, human trafficking from China to all over the world, child labour in Indonesia, China and several other countries. If you’re going to the think internationally, think GLOBALLY. That means ALL OF IT. Be informed, make informed economic decisions, for the benefit of all.
Of course, it’s impossible to focus your energy on all these issues at once, but pick one you can make a difference in.
Help the poor and the beaten by volunteering to provide meals and services locally. It helps the economy by increasing potential employment, increasing tax dollars for your government to spend on solving humanitarian crises globally.
If you plan on becoming a doctor, consider being a Doctor without Borders, work with people facing epidemics, improve people’s quality of life.
If you’re an artist, use your work to stand up for free speech, tackle the problems you’re most passionate about. You could open the eyes of someone ignorant to big problems. The rest of the media might not have told them about it, but you could.
If you’re an engineer, you could work on ways to provide sturdy housing at low cost to impoverished communities. If their tent could blow away at any moment, it is not shelter, and it is not helping them achieve their basic needs.
These are just a few ways you can help others on a big scale, now don’t let these goals take over your life. If your friend is having a depressive episode, put down the drawings, put away the calculator, step away from the kitchen. They need help, just like the rest. The severity of pain does not change whether or not it is pain.
Do the little, strive for the big.
