When Algy awoke the next morning he couldn't be sure that he wasn't still dreaming, for the forest seemed to have burst into glorious technicolour and all the plants and flowers looked exceptionally bright. However, in other respects his surroundings did appear to be much the same as the night before, so he had to assume that it was just the rainforest morning light playing tricks among the trees.
Opening his eyes a wee bit further, Algy leaned back on his branch and began to reflect on his situation. It was undoubtedly very pleasant to find oneself in a warm, bright, colourful environment – not to mention a calm one, free of torrential rain, hail and sleet driven by a vicious wind – but on the other hand he felt somewhat out of place in this strange and exotic land, and he was beginning to experience that mental malaise which is commonly known as homesickness…
As he gazed at the glowing flowers around him, Algy thought of the wild west Highland landscape in its drab winter coat, which it did not change until May at the earliest, and the dismal west Highland weather, which was generally wet and windy, and almost never warm the whole year through. It was hardly an enticing prospect, and yet…
Algy pondered. It seemed to him that there was much truth in the old saying "There's no place like home", and in common with a certain young lady in a well-known tale, Algy began to experience a desire to leave the mysterious if colourful land to which the wind had carried him, and to go back to his own sweet home, even if that meant a return to a monochrome landscape and a less comfortable life… 😉
