Bad news? Good news..Broccoli is bad for you.
All of these years your parents have told you to eat your vegetables and you would benefit from them later in life. Carrots would make you see in the dark, Spinach would make you strength and muscles grow, just like that of Popeye. But the latest Case study shows that you could have been eating the wrong kind of food after all.
New research carried out by the "US Agriculture Department studied 71 types of broccoli and found that virtually none of the compound glucoraphanin" were found.
Glucoraphanin is said to be found in broccoli and cauliflower originally. When eaten, the enzyme myrosinase transforms glucoraphanin into raphanin, which is an antibiotic, said to aid in the prevention of cancer.
Another setback for the vegetable and its friends, was the release of an official report by the US Government stating that "broccoli and carrots only contain half of the Vitamin A than earlier thought".
The 'Solution' to this problem is to make a hybrid vegetable. When researching it, it sounded awesome. Some kind of scientific experiment, I immediately thought of a horror film with a giant, monstrous broccoli that eats everyone and hides beneath the sink or under the fridge, waiting to find a prey and stroke on it.
But it turned out to be something a little more realistic, hybrid broccoli that simply is transformed to be richer in Glucoraphanin. Still quite cool though. And no, I still won't be eating it.
Genetic Engineering allows scientists to provide this kind of service to develop plants with specific traits. If you don't understand this process, just think of the Sims Franchise, and when you create your character OR you earn enough lifetime points to change your traits, just like that.
Don't rule out broccoli of your diet though, as long as you don't only eat broccoli then you still stand your chance at fighting cancer.
I recommend tomatoes - full of lycopene, which delays the trigger of cancer.
